Humboldt Made: Co-Opetition By Linda Stansberry, Social Media and Communications Coordinator, Humboldt Made How many Humboldt Made members does it take to create the world's yummiest vegan, gluten-free pie? The answer is at least three in the case of Natural Decadence Gluten- Free Bakery's Humboldt Mud Pie. The com- pany sourced ingredients from two other local companies – Dick Taylor Craft Choco- late and Humboldt Bay Coffee Company – to make this yummy vegan, gluten-free, nut- free pie. Top it off with some vegan vanilla gelato from Vixen Kitchen and you can taste the benefit of one of Humboldt Made's most prized values: Co-opetition. What is "co-opetition," you ask? Well, it's a mashup of cooperation and competition. You see, as in that pie, we know that our brand is much more delicious when we all work together. That doesn't mean that we're not competitive. We know (and our con- sumers say) that we have some of the best products around. And in a place that values craft beer, artisan food, good coffee and all things organic as much as Humboldt County, there's bound to be some overlap. So our local producers do compete with one another to make their product even better – tastier, healthier, more unique. But we keep it friendly. Our members attending Expo West are a great example of co-opetition at its finest. Some producers are targeting similar consumers, some come from widely different disci- plines. But all eight members came together to take advantage of a tradeshow curriculum developed by Humboldt Made, and to offer one another technical support as they pre- pared to head to the big show in Anaheim. Tradeshow veterans such as Humboldt Hot- sauce had invaluable nuts and bolts advice for first-time attendees Vixen Kitchen and Boujie Baking Co. ("Rent a hand truck. You'll be glad you did.") The businesses also collaborated on cards featur- ing the booth numbers of all members that they will hand out to encourage buyers to get a full taste of Humboldt Made products. Humboldt County is actu- ally a big place, with a lot of open space marked by dense forest, lush farmlands and big mountains. But in another sense, it's a small town. Our rural isolation makes it a place where neighbors depend on one another to succeed. Humboldt Made and its members are one of the best examples of that spirit.
