ESD: You have said that devices that are part of 1:1 computing programs should be thought of as BYOD devices. Can you explain? TE: Districts have found that school- issued devices are taken better care of if the students can personalize its configu- ration. This essentially changes the 1:1 devices into BYOD devices. ESD: Why do you say that? The device is still owned by the district rather than the student. TE: Yes, but for security purposes, once the device leaves the premises it becomes a BYOD device because stu- dents can personalize it. Students con- necting to the district's "cloud" for assignments, classwork or homework do so via an internet browser and this ele- vates the risk level because the device becomes open to all kinds of hazards. Unless the district plans to wipe the device every morning, each device will be inherently different from what it was when it left the school. ESD: That would be a management nightmare – from both a logistical and services viewpoint. IT'S TIME TO THINK OF ONE-TO-ONE PROGRAMS AS BYOD PROGRAMS TE: Right! The time needed to service each and every device would take up most of the day. The more appropriate way to manage these devices is to monitor and assess the security level of the device before and after it connects to the district's network. You can catch any malware that would potentially inter- rupt the learning process. ESD: Your company, Impulse Point, pro- vides a solution called SafeConnect.
