The company wel- comes Brown's leadership, developed over a decade of experience in the natural and organic food sector. Brown has had a long, successful career in the or- ganic food industry, throughout which he has been a tireless advocate of living a healthy, natural life. Brown's first job, working in a grocery store in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa, inspired a lifelong love of the food and foodservice industry. Brown officially joined NMFG in July 2014, after serving as the Chief Operations Officer of New Seasons Market, a locally- owned chain of natural food stores in Oregon. Brown received his degree in business from Saint Ambrose University and immediately began gaining valuable retail experience at food companies across the United States. He developed a passion for healthy living during the course of his career and has since worked tirelessly to promote natural and organic foods. As a member of the Board of Directors at Zenger Farms in Portland, Oregon, he was instrumental in the development of a farmers' market program that em- phasized educating city children on where good food comes from. Pat also played a role in getting the mar- kets sponsored by Zenger Farms to accept payment through SNAP funds. Leslie Uhl Named Comté Scholarship Winner The winner of the third annual Comté Scholarship for American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Profession- als™ has been announced. Leslie Uhl, cheesemonger and business specialist for Di Bruno Bros in Philadel- phia, scored the highest points in the blind essay con- test and has won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Comté region to explore the area and its culture and to learn about production and the cheese's history. Uhl began her professional career as a cheesemonger three years ago and became an ACS CCP in September. "Winning this scholarship is easily the most exciting news I've had all year, second only to the news of pass- ing the ACS CCP exam," said Uhl. "I'm so thrilled to be a part of a new adventure, and I can't wait to be at the heart of French cheese making in the Comté region." This year's essay question focused on the importance of preserving traditional methods of cheese production and explored how Comté's PDO specifications ensure a link between terroir and flavor. The essays were judged anonymously on the basis of knowledge and creativity by a panel of three renowned cheese experts, including former Board President of the American Cheese Society Greg O'Neill, Global Cheese Buyer for Whole Foods Mar- ket Cathy Strange and maître fromager Max McCalman. Made exclusively in the Jura Mountain region of France, Comté is an artisanal cheese with AOC and PDO designations.
