GOURMET NEWS DECEMBER 2014 www.gourmetnews.com GENERAL NEWS 5 Hamdi Ulukaya, Founder and CEO of Chobani, recently made a personal pledge of $2 million to address the urgent and crit- ical needs of refugees escaping violence along the Iraqi and Syrian borders of Turkey. Ulukaya is making initial donations to the UNHCR and International Rescue Committee, which both have longstanding, large-scale humanitarian relief operations in the region. In addition to this support, Ulukaya plans to identify other innovative nongovernmental organizations and sup- port their on-the-ground relief work, in- cluding long-term recovery and economic stabilization efforts. Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who are flee- ing violence in Syria and Iraq are in urgent need of relief, particularly winter supplies. "We all have a moral responsibility to help innocent victims of violence, wherever they are and however we can," said Ulukaya. "These refugees have seen the darkest side of humanity, and we must open our hearts as they look to rebuild their lives." "As a citizen of the world, I believe we must unite together to bring awareness, at- tention and relief for victims of human tragedy," Ulukaya added. Said David Milliband, President and CEO of the IRC, "At a time of immense hu- manitarian catastrophe around the globe, this contribution will provide relief for tens of thousands of people fleeing vio- lence. The IRC helps civilians in need, no matter their race or creed, and with donors like Hamdi, we can help preserve dignity and life for those in great need." Anne-Marie Grey, Chief Executive Officer of USA for UNHCR said, "Pri- vate philanthropists like Hamdi Ulukaya provide leadership to one of the most critical issues facing humanity today. His gift will bring desperately needed supplies for thousands of refugees immediately. We stand ready to work with him and others in bringing hope and dignity to the world hu- manitarian crises." Hamdi Ulukaya is a Kurdish Turk who immigrated to the United States in the 1990s and in 2007 founded Chobani, a top selling Greek yogurt brand. Hamdi is a member of the Pres- idential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship and has been recognized with the 2013 Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award and Small Business Association's Entrepreneur- ial Success Award, among others. GN Chobani Founder Hamdi Ulukaya Pledges $2 million for Humanitarian Relief to Iraqi and Syrian Refugees Steak, pizza and waffles are among Ameri- cans' all-time favorite foods, according to a new, recently released study. Researchers polled 1,300 men and women from across the country and found that a juicy steak is the food most likely to leave American con- sumers' mouths watering. In general, meats featured heavily in the list, with chicken, beef, bacon and corned beef also among the top 10 most popular foods. Mozzarella cheese, avocado and pasta completed the top 10. Other Ameri- can food favorites include salmon, blueber- ries and oysters. "It seems America as a nation is a big fan of meat in general with it featuring heavily in the list of top foods," said Greg West, President of Davidson's Safest Choice Pas- teurized Eggs, which commissioned the re- search. "Many people would agree you can't beat a nice piece of steak from the grill at the end of long day." "But it's great to see that a lot of staple items such as pasta, cheese and eggs are also so popular and feature among the more luxury items," West added. "Steak might be great, but without the staple items to go alongside it, the meal just wouldn't be the same." Pineapple was voted Americans' eleventh top food, followed by peanut but- ter, hamburgers, sushi and pancakes. Noo- dles, chocolate, blueberries, salmon and bananas complete the top 20. Other foods named among Americans' food favorites include sweet potato, donuts, turkey, candy and popcorn. When it comes to breakfast, eggs are the most popular choice for 69 percent of Amer- icans, followed by bacon, cold cereal and pancakes. Respondents also said they love toast, bagels, biscuits, English muffins, hash browns and oatmeal. At lunchtime, more than half of those polled turn to the all- American sandwich and a salad, with more than 46 percent choosing the perennial fa- vorite hamburger. Three out of four people pick chicken as their dinner favorite, fol- lowed by vegetables, pasta and pizza. More than half of those surveyed said that caviar is their least loved food, followed by liver and Brussels sprouts. Just 12 percent said that there are no foods they despise.
