In his role, Burns will oversee all aspects of the business ensuring its goals are met. Burns has clearly defined strategic growth objec- tives for Justin's, which include revenue, growth mar- gin and a focus on product and innovation. Since joining the company earlier this year, Burns has been integral to building up the brand's operations team in an effort to put it in a prime position for rapid growth. In addition, Burns has supported the sales function by bringing on two new team members, a Senior Vice President of Sales and a Vice President of Sales, to im- plement a sales strategy and help the team to focus on the brand's top customers. "I have been in this industry for over 20 years, and it has always been my goal to lead a passion brand that stays true to its mission and provides consumers with products they can both trust and enjoy," said Burns. Melissa Hughes of Organic Valley to lead OTA's Board of Directors Melissa Hughes of Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative was recently tapped as the new President of the Or- ganic Trade Association's Board of Directors. Elected as an OTA director in 2013, Hughes is General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs for Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative. "Today more than ever, advocating for organic is critical for our families, farms and food," said Hughes. "Organic isn't just a consumer lifestyle, it's the future of farming. We've made much progress in recent years, and yet, there's more work to be done educating and demystifying organic." Hughes has been with Organic Valley/CROPP Coop- erative in her current position since 2003, managing all of the co-op's legal affairs and overseeing relation- ships with various governmental groups, including leg- islators, agencies and other regulatory entities. Organic Valley is America's largest cooperative of or- ganic farmers and one of the nation's leading organic brands. Organized in 1988, it currently represents 1,844 farmers in 36 states. Focused on its founding mission of saving family farms through organic farm- ing, Organic Valley produces a variety of organic foods. OTA's Board of Directors is democratically elected by its members. In the recent election held this sum- mer, a record 34.8 percent of OTA's trade member companies eligible to vote did so. Also, by a nearly unanimous vote, OTA members approved the Board recommendation to change the OTA bylaws to move its current fiscal year to the calendar year. Frozen Food Foundation Announces 2014 Freezing Research Award Winner The Frozen Food Foundation, in conjunction with the International Association for Food Protection, recently presented Juming Tang of Washington State University with the fifth annual Frozen Food Foundation Freezing Research Award. The award, which recognizes individuals or organ- izations whose research contributes to the continued enhancement of food quality and safety through freez- ing, was presented to Tang during the IAFP 2014 An- nual Meeting in Indianapolis. Tang was selected for his significant contributions to enhance the fields of food process engineering and, in particular, the develop- ment of in-package microwave pasteurization tech- nology for control of microbial and viral pathogens in frozen and chilled meals. "The Frozen Food Foundation is pleased to recognize the achievements of Dr. Tang through the presentation of the Freezing Research Award," said Foundation Pres- ident Kraig R. Naasz, who also serves as President and CEO of the American Frozen Food Institute. "Dr. Tang's contributions to the field of food science and engineer- ing have aided the scientific community and consumers alike by demonstrating innovation through increased product quality, safety and shelf life." Tang holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Central-South University of Technology in China and an M.S. and Ph.D. in agricultural engineering from the Universities of Guelph and Saskatchewan in Canada. Dr. Tang is currently Regents Professor at Washington State University. In addition, he is a fellow of IFT and also served as chairman of the Food Engineering Di- vision of IFT from 2010-2011.
