Wave of Mini Appliances Reflects Changing Household Demographics, American Consumer Preferences BY AMBER GALLEGOS Changing American lifestyles means that the way people shop has changed too. Sin- gle person households are now more com- mon than they were 30 years ago, and a wave of small electrics scaled down to serve up smaller portions has cropped up to serve those individuals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2013 there were 34 million people living alone, or 27 percent of all households, up from 17 percent in 1970. Contributing to the shifting demographics of households is the fact that Americans are getting married later in life than they ever have before. The median age at first marriage is now 27 for women and 29 for men, up from 20 for women and 23 for men in 1960, according to the Pew Research Center. When today's young adults reach their mid-40s to mid-50s, a record high share of 25 percent is likely to have never been mar- ried. This translates to folks living solitary lives longer and most likely not needing those larger scale appliances until later on. With more than a quarter of American households only cooking and shopping for one, it is no wonder that there is now a mini version of almost all of the essential small ap- pliances. Add to that the fact that the average population per household is now 2.55, down from 3.67 in 1948, and it becomes more ap- parent that for many folks smaller is better. Small personal electrics typically serve up portions that are perfect for one or two people, compared to the larger versions that can feed a family of three to five or more. On top of that, many do double duty, making them friendlier for smaller spaces where storage is at a premium, like dorm rooms and RVs.
