GOURMET NEWS OCTOBER 2014 www.gourmetnews.com Small Electrics SMALL ELECTRICS 2 8 With Mixers Available for Every Need and Budget, Choosing the Right Model to Carry Can Be a Challenge BY AMBER GALLEGOS When it comes to selecting which mixer to carry in your store, the differences can often be quite subtle, and there are many factors to consider. Stand mixers, hand mixers and blenders will all have many overlapping fea- tures. However, the subtle differences inher- ent in each are enough to justify carrying at least one low-end and one high-end version of each of these appliances. A hand mixer is good for customers who only do occasional baking and bread mak- ing. If a customer is an avid baker who reg- ularly bakes and requires help with kneading large amounts of dough, a stand mixer will be a better choice. And a strong blender, like Blendtec Designer 725, will be able to make smaller batches of batter, dough and whipped cream. When choosing a mixer or blender to offer your customers, there are many fea- tures to consider. The motor gearing can be metal or nylon, with metal being more long-lasting. The mixer can have a lift or tilt mechanism for the bowl, the difference being a matter of preference. The number of speeds will vary, but at least six are preferable, ensuring the mixer can com- plete many tasks. You should also consider the weight of the mixer. A heavier machine will minimize any movement while in ac- tion, although, on some lighter models, suction feet will hold it in place. Dish- washer-safe attachments make cleanup eas- ier, and a splash guard will aid in keeping the entire process in the bowl. Finally, a mixer with planetary mixing action will re- duce the amount of time needed scraping down the sides of the bowl. Of course, there are accessories to con- sider as well. Some mixers will come with all the extras that are available, while others might have additional accessories that are available as separate purchases. Basic mixer accessories include a whisk, dough hook and beater. Others might feature a special drive where separate attachments transform the mixer into a meat grinder, pasta maker, citrus juicer, food processor and more. Reading the fine print on the specifica- tions of stand mixers may provide insight as to what precisely is the difference be- tween a $100 mixer and a $600 alternative. So do not simply let that one big name in stand mixers dominate your choices. There are plenty of other options out there. GN
