The right product can simplify the process with great results that will reduce your energy and maintenance costs while creating a safer, more inviting environment for your customers. Earlier this year, station owner Mike Stancevic decided his service station needed a "face lift." He was in the middle of a re-image and decided to improve the canopy at the same time by raising the height and upgrading the lights to LED. According to Stancevic, the existing fixtures became dim over time and his station didn't have adequate lighting at night. This created a concern for both safety and security. "It was critical to make a change for us to have the right level of light at night. It is important for our customers to feel safe," said Stancevic. The new height of the canopy required a bright but efficient light that would illuminate both the canopy and the periphery. Upon inspection, the company performing the installation recommended the use of SloanLED's Progressive Down Light (PDL). "I'm very pleased we went with SloanLED PDLs – they certainly made a difference," said Stancevic. "SloanLED's use of a progressive reflec- tor spread light out gradu- ally and helped to illumi- nate peripheral areas, making our customers feel safe," explained Stancevic. Six months later he con- firmed, "significant power savings fol- lowing the installation of the new canopy down lights." The light feature an all-aluminum powder coated body with a tempered glass lens. This brings an end to rusty painted steel light fixtures and broken, cracked, scratched, or yellowed plastic lenses to which the industry has become accustomed. The lens is also offered in a textured version to make the light source visible at greater distances. "The SloanLED Progressive Down Light was designed for performance, but also to look great for many years to come," stated Sam Fisher, Director of Lighting Systems and Business Development at SloanLED. Cleaning the SloanLED PDL is simple, as the whole fixture is totally sealed against water, dust, dirt or insect ingress, which has plagued under canopy HID lights since their introduction decades ago. "SloanLED has been working with LEDs since the early 1970s and, unlike many of our competitors, we have over 55 years of experience in the design and build of high quality, high reliability LED lighting products," explained Fisher.  For more information, visit booth #4605. IMPROVEMENTS TO CUSTOMER RESTROOM MAKE 'CENTS' FOR FASTRIP An interview with Rich Abel, Director of Stores, Fastrip Food Stores. CRSD: Tell our readers about your com- pany. What's your main line of business? RA: Fastrip has 53 stores located throughout California and Arizona. We sell gasoline, snacks, cigarettes, soft drinks, beer and hundreds of other items ready to go when you need them. In addition to all the products the standard convenience store is known for, we also have a complete assortment of groceries and fill-in shopping items at very com- petitive prices. We also have Cold Caves in many of our stores maintain- ing 28 degree temperature. Fast, friend- ly service in a clean, well-lit store is our trademark. CRSD: What products available at the NACS show have improved your business? RA: Our customers are on the go and many need to use our restrooms while they stop to shop. We are in the process of renovating many of our Fastrip loca- tions and have included high-speed, ener- gy-efficient XLERATOR ® hand dryers by Excel Dryers as part of the remodel. CRSD: How has this product improved business? RA: Convenience is our industry, so it's important for Fastrip to provide clean, hygienic restrooms. Keeping paper tow- els in stock and refilling dispensers was challenging in our high volume stores. In fact, we often installed two towel dis- pensers to make sure we did not run out of paper towels. Installing XLERATOR hand dryers decreased our need for paper towels, which reduced our costs signifi- cantly including substantial plumbing and repair fees from the improper dispos- al of paper towels that clog toilets and urinals. It also aided in keeping our restrooms clean, orderly and efficient. CRSD: How do customers react to using this product? RA: Paper towels littered across the rest- room create an untidy appearance, which negatively impacts the customer experi- ence. Unlike many competitor products, XLERATOR hand dryers are reliable and offer a variety of optional accessories to enhance the hand drying experience. For example, XLERATOR hand dryers can be installed with an ADA-compliant recess kit, a 1.1 Noise Reduction Nozzle for sound-sensitive environments, the new HEPA Filtration System, and they even have custom digital image covers among other options. With XLERATOR our customers and employees are always able to dry their hands in a safe and san- itary manner and we never have to worry about stocking paper towels. CRSD: Did you consider alternative solutions? RA: The XLERATOR is the Cadillac of hand dryers and it is competitively priced. Excel Dryer has developed a reputation for manufacturing the industry standard and we want to provide the best equipment for our stores and customers. CRSD: Are there any other added bene- fits to this product? RA: It's a "dollars and cents" thing – XLERATOR hand dryers just make sense. Not only do they offer cost savings that positively impact our bottom line, but they are also a sustainable solution. At Fastrip, we try to find the balance between running our business efficiently and being environmentally responsible citizens. XLERATOR hand dryers save money, provide a positive customer experience and they are environmentally friendly. It's a "no-brainer" convenient solution for the convenience industry.
