G a m i n g N e ws Th u r s d a y, O c to b e r 2 , 2 0 1 4 4 4K RESOLUTION CAPABILITY LAUNCHES NEW ERA FOR LED DISPLAYS By Craig Katt, Senior V.P. of Display Technologies, Trans-Lux Corporation For broadcast, sports and government display applications that demand the best of the best in resolution, new TL Vision LED displays with 4K capability from Trans-Lux Corporation (TLNX) are pro- viding the solution. With four times the detail available on 1080p flat screen tele- visions, 4K resolution is a new era in large screen LED display technology. 4K, or ultra-high definition (UHD) employs a pixel array of 3840 by 2160 to yield a total of 8,294,400 pixels. In com- parison, the 1080 HD standard utilizes 1920 by 1080 pixels to yield a total of 2,073,600 pixels, and the 720 HD stan- dard employs 720 by 1280 pixels for a total of 921,600 pixels. Therefore, UHD 4K provides four times the resolution of 1080 and eight times that of the 720. One of the most obvious advantages of UHD is that the higher pixel density allows for closer viewing without the grid structuring or pixelization inherent in LED displays. Content displayed on TL Vision LED dis- plays with 4K capability is rendered with incredible clarity and brightness for viewing from virtually any viewing angle and in any lighting condition. From board rooms to museum displays to stu- dio sets, LED displays with 4K capabili- ty will enhance the viewing experience. There is one caveat to be aware of, however, and that is a phenomenon called "choking." While the display may be MAXTIME HOLE CARD READER PROVIDES SPEED, SECURITY The MAXTime ® hole card reader, invented by Arthur Miller of Tech Art and introduced to Nevada casinos in early 1990, is the ideal solution to a dilemma that turned up in Nevada in the 1990s, after blackjack rules were changed to provide greater security against hole card exposure and dealer tells. This rule change eliminated the problem of hole card exposure, but creat- ed another one: the loss of a dozen or so hands per hour as a result of playing out hands when the dealer had blackjack at the outset but was not aware of the fact until the players played out their hands. In addition, the new procedure irritated players, particularly if they doubled down or drew to 21, but belatedly lost their bet. Miller, who had worked in table gaming in Las Vegas casinos for many years, was convinced there was a way to address hole card security without caus- ing delays to the game and without the loss of hands per hour caused by not allowing the dealer to check the hole card or not allowing the dealer to receive a second card at the outset of play. He went to work on a prototype at his kitchen table, perfecting it until the MAXTime hole card reader was ready for its debut in Nevada casinos. The device provides perfect security against hole card expo- sure and dealer tells, while significantly increasing dealer productivity; the best of both worlds and an invaluable addition to table gaming. The device came into almost univer- sal use in Nevada casinos and the compa- ny then directed its efforts to New Jersey, Continued on Page 37 Continued on Page 37 Lee M.
