G a m i n g N e ws 1 5 Tu e s d a y, S e p te m b e r 3 0 , 2 0 1 4 MAXTIME HOLE CARD READER PROVIDES SPEED, SECURITY The MAXTime ® hole card reader, invent- ed by Arthur Miller of Tech Art and intro- duced to Nevada casinos in early 1990, is the ideal solution to a dilemma that turned up in Nevada in the 1990s, after blackjack rules were changed to provide greater security against hole card exposure and dealer tells. This rule change eliminated the problem of hole card exposure, but creat- ed another one: the loss of a dozen or so hands per hour as a result of playing out hands when the dealer had blackjack at the outset but was not aware of the fact until the players played out their hands. In addition, the new procedure irritated players, particularly if they doubled down or drew to 21, but belatedly lost their bet. Miller, who had worked in table gaming in Las Vegas casinos for many years, was convinced there was a way to address hole card security without caus- ing delays to the game and without the loss of hands per hour caused by not allowing the dealer to check the hole card or not allowing the dealer to receive a second card at the outset of play. He went to work on a prototype at his kitchen table, perfecting it until the MAXTime hole card reader was ready for its debut in Nevada casinos. The device provides perfect security against hole card exposure and dealer tells, while significantly increasing dealer productiv- ity; the best of both worlds and an invalu- able addition to table gaming. The device came into almost universal use in Nevada casinos and the com- pany then directed its efforts to New Jersey, where man- dated rules of play precluded the dealer from checking the hole card whether the up card was an ace or a ten value card, a rule which, like the European rule of not allowing the dealer a second card until all play is concluded, has an even greater negative impact on productivity and revenue. From its beginnings in Nevada and expansion to Atlantic City, Tech Art then entered the casino market in Puerto Rico, whose gaming regulation largely mir- rored New Jersey. Like New Jersey, Puerto Rico permitted a rule change to allow the use of the MAXTime device. Introduction of the MAXTime hole card reader and Las Vegas-style black- jack has led to significant revenue increases for casi- nos that had previously been limited to dealing the European-style no-hole-card blackjack. Now, Tech Art has introduced the MAXTime 4H™, an even better version of the original MAXTime that fits into the chip tray. This dealer- friendly device is always in the correct position to maximize hole card security and speed of the game. With its dual- locking lid, polycarbonate shatterproof glass and reinforced steel frame, the MAXTime 4H also has the product reli- ability that Tech Art customers have come to count on.
