The company focus is based on outstanding design, superior usability and value to the con- sumer which will give retailers and car- riers a unique advantage in the market over their competitors. ARE YOU VIRTUALLY READY – OR ACTUALLY READY? (PART TWO) By Pardeep Kohli, CEO, Mavenir In Part One of this article, we dis- cussed what NFV is and how it has the potential to revolutionize the telecoms industry. Today, we will cover how operators can take advantage of the promises of NFV today. The mistaken belief in the mobile industry is that NFV progress is hin- dered by a lack of vendor readiness and technology maturity. In our case, that is simply not true, but in any case it misses the point of NFV entirely. In an NFV world, operators do not have to wait for their current hardware ven- dor to be ready with a software based solution – they can deploy network functions on software from any vendor on industry standards servers. NFV is a true Software as a Service (SaaS) envi- ronment that gives operators the chance to act now, and not wait for their traditional hardware vendor of choice to be ready. Mavenir has a full virtualized portfolio of software products that can run on industry standard COTS servers today. Mavenir 's mOne ® Convergence Platform is underpinning the adoption by operators today of NFV solutions and sits at the heart of our live opera- tor implementations of VoLTE, RCS and VoWi-Fi services. We predicted and have now proven how NFV can dramatically reduce network com- plexity and cost while making it easier to build capacity and add flexibility to a network. For example, a fault in an NFV environment can be more easily by-passed – traffic switched to another blade or server – than is the case in the physical hardware world, and an operator no longer requires separate systems to run its back office systems as spare server capacity in quiet periods for network traffic, such as overnight, can be used to run functions such as billing. But as well as potentially making it easier to source, operate, manage and maintain the network, NFV also makes it far easier to roll out new serv- ices across the network – in fact, a sur- vey of mobile operators by analysts at Heavy Reading highlighted this as the most critical feature driving NFV implementation. Here at Mavenir, we advise operators to decide which parts of the network they want to vir- tualize first. For example, many of the operators Mavenir works with are starting with the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), while others are starting with the IMS core. With Mavenir's virtualized solu- tions, operators can move at their own pace and virtualize whatever meets their business objectives. NFV's capability to power new services, drive down costs and increase network flexibility is available today. Virtualization is not virtually here; it is actually here and deployed, and go- ahead operators are already realizing the benefits. For more information, visit booth 4448. NEW ULTRA COMPACT HIGH-DEFINITION ACTION CAMERA WIDENS 2014 LINEUP The Whistler Group, Inc., a leading industry supplier of laser/radar detec- tors, inspection cameras, power invert- ers and other consumer electronics, announced a new addition to their 2014 product line with the rush™ Action Camera. Rush is the first in a series of consumer compact video camera recorders scheduled for a 2014 release by Whistler. The rush camera is an ultra com- pact, high-definition sport/action cam- era with extensive mounting capabili- ties that, when coupled with the included durable, waterproof protec- tion case (up to 100 feet), allows the user to capture stunning video footage in extreme environments that standard video cameras cannot handle. The camera features 30 frames per second, 1080p professional quality high-defi- nition video recording and 8 megapix- el photos. Data can be stored via dual card slots for removable micro-SD media that make playback, capturing and editing easy. Playback can also be achieved on the 1.5-inch on-board monitor, or by connecting the camera's HDMI output to a high-definition tele- vision or monitor. The wide variety of included cam- era mounts, a two-hour rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a durable waterproof protection case all make rush the perfect mobile companion to carry while participating in extreme activities such as cycling, skiing/snow- boarding, diving/water sports, moun- tain biking, motorcycling/motocross and much more. Additionally, by using the included windshield mounting bracket and mobile charging cradle, the rush camera can double as an automotive DVR to cap- ture driving footage that would be useful in the event of an accident, for monitoring teenage driving or documenting scenic road trips. Other highlights include white light LED lighting, time- lapse recording and a G-Sensor video protection feature. "Our goal with this product intro- duction is to offer a versatile camera that has everything you need included at time of purchase," said Leslie Folsom, EVP, Marketing and Operations, Whistler Group, Inc. "The features and included accessories make this camera a terrific consumer value and a great alternative to more expen- sive cameras on the market." The rush camera is Whistler's first release from a family of video cameras being added to the Whistler 2014 prod- uct lineup. While rush features dual functional- ity of both action camera and automotive DVR, the remaining cameras are tailored towards automotive use. Retail availability expected in March.
