S o l a r Po we r D a i l y N e ws W e d n e s d a y, J u l y 9 , 2 0 1 4 4 21.2 PERCENT RECORD PERC CELL CONVERSION EFFICIENCY USING HERAEUS METALLIZATION PASTES By Andreas Henning, Global Technical Service Manager, Heraeus Photovoltaics Business Unit. The Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH), in conjunction with Heraeus Photovoltaics' Silver metalliza- tion pastes for advanced cell designs, produced a world record PERC cell con- version efficiency of 21.2 percent. At the time this article was written, 21.2 percent represented the highest efficiency report- ed for industry-typical p-type silicon solar cells using screen-printed metal contacts. The measurements were con- firmed by the independent institute Fraunhofer ISE CalLab. A combination of various cell and paste technologies enabled this record result on an industrial PERC solar cell. ISFH developed a unique PERC cell design using: industrial processes; dual printing; five busbars and a stenciling printing process for the finger lines. In contrast to conventional solar cells, PERC cells have a passivated rear-side, which increases the amount of energy captured from the cell. The resulting cell has higher voltages, but also makes the PERC cell more sensitive to emitter dam- ages from the metallization. Heraeus' SOL325 Series does not fire through the passivation layer and therefore does not damage the emitter. The SOL325 Series also provides high mechanical adhesion. Heraeus' SOL9610 Series, for the finger lines, is optimized to create an electrical contact to the silicon and has excellent conductivity to carry the electrons. The SOL9610 processes a greater aspect ratio with 46 µm finger line widths, allowing ISFH to process cells with a higher fill factor and lower series resistance. The five-busbar layout combined with stencil print reduces the metallized area and shadowing loss for the additional gain in Isc while reducing series resistance. ISFH's dual printing with the Heraeus SOL325 Series for the busbars and our SOL9610 for the finger lines gives an additional boost in Voc. The combination of all of these advan- tages leads to this breakthrough. It is our BAJA'S SOLAR SUPPORT SYSTEM – DESIGNED FROM A CARPORT BUT ENGINEERED FOR THE SUN Baja Construction, the leader in highly specialized and engineered solar support structures, has installed its Solar Support System™ at facilities generating in aggregate of 35MWs of power. Baja will custom design, engineer, supply and install Solar Support Systems to support PV and secondarily shade vehicles of all heights. PV is mounted directly to Baja's Solar Support System with a patent-pending connection that delivers minimal impact to the site, max- imum efficiencies for installation and the potential for additional revenue.
