BH: Baja, established in 1981, is a construction company engaged in the business of highly specialized and engineered high-tensile, light gauge steel structures. We design, engineer, supply and install solar support structures as part of a solar ground-mount, carport and RV/Boat Storage solution and continue to build carports, RV/Boat and Self-Storage facilities. SPDN: Why is Baja winning most of the solar structure business? BH: We are a nationwide company, operating under 43 years of experience building light gauge, high-tensile steel structures. In 1981, we were building carports and then BAJA – WHY ARE THEY WINNING SO MANY SOLAR DEALS? An interview with Dr. Weiming Zhang, Vice President of Technology, Heraeus Photovoltaics Business Unit. SPDN: Tell our readers a little about Heraeus and your photovoltaics business. WZ: Heraeus is a globally active, Hanau-based, family-run precious metal and technology enterprise with a history of more than 160 years. We provide high-end solutions to our customers to strengthen their long-term compet- itive positions. Our areas of competence include precious metals, materials and tech- nologies, sensors, biomaterials and medical devices, quartz glass and specialty light sources. In the financial year 2013, Heraeus achieved revenues from the sales of prod- ucts of €3.6 billion, while the revenues from precious metal trading were €13.5 billion. With about 12,500 employees in more than 110 companies world-wide, Heraeus occu- pies leading positions in the global markets it pursues. The Heraeus Photovoltaics An interview with Josh Goldberg, Marketing Specialist, Taiyo America. SPDN: Tell our readers about your company. What's your main line of business? JG: Taiyo America just celebrated 20 years in North America. Our parent company, Taiyo Holdings, based in Japan, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Our main line of business has tradition- ally been making solder masks for the printed circuit board (PCB) industry. We are one of the largest solder mask manufacturers in the world. In the last few years, we have taken a look at other industries where our rigorously manufactured products would be a good fit, and solar has been identified as an excellent target market. SPDN: What would you say makes your company unique? By Neil Bradley, Director of Sales, M Bar C Construction, Inc. M Bar C Construction, Inc., located in San Marcos, Calif., is best known for building custom steel solar carports. It leads the solar carport industry in project costs reduction, safety and innovation by being the first steel carport contractor to install the new Solar F.I.T. System™. "This new F.I.T. (Fast Install Track) system is a real game changer," said Neil Bradley, Director of Sales at M Bar C Construction. "It sig- nificantly reduces panel install times, and addresses many jobsite safety concerns." He added, "We have begun building steel carports using the new F.I.T. system specifica- tions. Based on its totally unique installation approach, we anticipate consistent panel install labor savings of as much as 50 percent or more. For projects where portrait panel orientation makes sense, purlin material costs are also reduced. On projects with hun- dreds or thousands of panels, the combined savings are significant."
