E d Te c h S h o w D a i l y Tu e s d a y, J u l y 1 , 2 0 1 4 6 HOW SYSTEM ADMINS CAN MITIGATE IAM ISSUES IN EDUCATION Identity and access management in schools can be difficult, since system administrators are dealing with several different types of groups of people, including students, teachers and others who need access rights to a variety of accounts. The following are some com- mon identity and access management issues that schools face and how they can easily mitigate them. Ensuring the Correct Access At the beginning of each semester or school year, system admins have to cre- ate accounts for new students, teachers and employees. Though provisioning accounts is not a difficult task, it is time consuming, since each account in a sys- tem or application has to be created man- ually. On top of that, each person or group needs different types of accounts and access privileges. Take, for example, North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District in New Jersey, where stu- dents were coming in as freshmen, grad- uating as seniors or leaving mid-year, and all needed appropriate computer access to be assigned or removed. The district implemented Tools4ever's User Management Resource Administrator (UMRA). The solution allows system admins to easily enter all information into their student information system, and each night network accounts are automatically created. De-provisioning Staff and Students While it is important that students and staff have correct access to systems and a p p l i c a t i o n s while attending the school, it is also important that their access is changed accordingly once they are longer there. Often, when students graduate they are left active on the school's network. Though de-provisioning students and staff is not difficult, it is often over- looked since admins need to be notified and then have to manually disable the person from each system and application. Fitchburg State College was one such school dealing with this issue. The school's AD did not match its actual environment, since many employees and students were left active. With UMRA, if a terminated or graduated flag is set in the Student Information System (SIS) application at Fitchburg, the account is disabled according to pre-defined rules. Password Issues After Hours Often students and employees complete school work after school hours, and after the hours of the help desk. What happens when they forget their password or lock themselves out of their accounts? The students and teachers at Harrison College were experiencing this issue. Since Harrison College is spread out among 13 campuses and offers an online program, they serve students from any given time between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. The college implement- ed Tools4ever's Self Service Password Reset Management (SSRPM) solution to allow users to reset their passwords without contacting the help desk. They simply correctly answer security ques- tions which they previously provided answers to, and can securely reset their own passwords. Core Augmented Reality Education, LLC I became the Director of Education for C.A.R.E. earlier this year because I was interested in furthering my teaching career and developing content that would enrich a student's learning experience through the integration of technology. The supple- mental materials in our product suite we are introducing at ISTE are made accessi- ble to students in a multitude of environ- ments. Our products utilize leading edge augmented reality technologies to create a virtual learning experience for students. The animated multimedia lessons are viewed through our 4D educational appli- cation using an iOS or Android smart device. In addition, all of our content is available online. Students have the oppor- tunity to engage with interactive materials and make real world connections. We are currently using an augmented reality cre- ative tool DAQRI 4D Studio to build the first ever 4D-enabled worksheet, workbook and virtual lab aligned to nation-wide edu- cation standards including Common Core. At ISTE, we will be demonstrating our 4D mobile app for C.A.R.E. in addition to our full product suite. Attendees can visit us at booth 1826, where we will be demon- strating our app for C.A.R.E. in addition to our full product suite. At ISTE we will be holding two draw- ings, one for the giveaway of a 7.0" Samsung Galaxy Tab3 Lite, and the other for a one year free subscription to a pack- age of our supplemental material in our product suite, of the entrant's choice grade and content area. We hope you will stop by our booth to view a demonstration, give us feedback about our products, as well as enter to win one of these great giveaways! Visit C.A.R.E. at booth 1826. POWERFUL NEW ANALYTICS SOLUTION BRINGS ASSESSMENT DATA TO LIFE By Anthony Cross, VP, Portfolio Planning & Strategy, Scantron Corporation Today, many districts and schools face a need to use assessment data to make more informed instructional decisions. However, when assessment data is stored in multiple formats, over multi- ple years, uncovering the hidden pat- terns and trends needed to paint a com- plete picture of student achievement can be challenging. Too often, the only option educators have for viewing their assessment data is through rows and columns of numbers in a report or spreadsheet, which can obscure more interesting insights. "Data rich, but information poor," has become an all- too common complaint. As a leading partner delivering assessment products and services, Scantron has first-hand experience of the struggles that districts go through to make better use of their assessment data, whether from state summative tests, dis- trict benchmark testing, college readiness exams or classroom assessments. We see customers who have years' worth of test data sitting in spreadsheets, but who lack a solution to unlock more value from that data. Traditional solutions define fixed paths for drilling into data, pre-define the reports and queries that must be used and lock-down the types of data that can be analyzed. The Information Technology (IT) department often plays a significant role in such solu- tions, as they have to create the data models and build the reports and dashboards, often based on one-off requests. This can be a time-consuming process for IT, as well as a frus- trating process for the edu- cators who need fast access to information. To meet this need, Scantron is pleased to announce Scantron Assessment Analytics, pow- ered by QlikView. Scantron Assessment Analytics provides a pow- erful solution for analyzing longitudi- nal assessment data from multiple sources, and includes a wide range of interactive dashboards that help visual- ize the data. Views are made more powerful and easier to use with pre- built connectors to commonly-used assessment sources, including Scantron's market-leading assessment solution, Achievement Series. Ranked by analyst firm Gartner as a leader in Business Intelligence and Analytics technology, QlikView uses a patented "associative" query language to create a virtual data warehouse, bypassing what can be a complex and time-consuming IT project. Implementation time is measured in days, rather than months, and educators can ask any question of the data with no restrictions or limitations. Scantron Assessment Analytics helps administrators easily ask and answer questions about their assess- ment data from a district or school per- spective, quickly identifying achieve- ment gaps by gender, ethnicity or school. Teachers can analyze student data for their classroom, looking at scores broken down by standard to identify specific instructional needs at a class or student level. Visit Scantron at booth 934.
