H o s p i ta l i t y & D e s i g n S h o w D a i l y 1 9 M o n d a y, J u n e 9 , 2 0 1 4 test. Environmental groups and some medical researchers have studied the bioaccumulation effects and health effects of one class of halogenated flame retardants, PBDEs. These researchers question the need for additional furniture flammability regulation, beyond CAL TB 117-2013, considering the potential human health risks. There are passionate arguments on each side. Do we risk more fire deaths by consumers and fire fighters by reducing flammability regulations for furniture? Do we risk long term health effects on the general population by using flame retardants that may be harmful? If it is possible to make furniture less flamma- ble without risks to our health, shouldn't we do so? Fortunately, they are not mutually Furniture Flammability (Cont'd. from p. 1) exclusive. We can have greater fire safe- ty with upholstered furniture without risk from the chemical exposure of halo- genated flame retardants. Preferred Finishing's Firewall K-800 series of fire barrier interliners does not contain any halogenated flame retardants or "BIFMA's Chemicals of Concern." The company is the leading fire barrier interliner producer in the United States. Firewall Barriers are highly effective and can be used to meet the most stringent furniture flammability regulations like CAL TB 133 and the Boston Fire Code. Preferred's line of Firewall Barriers work well with either smoldering or open flame ignition sources. JB: Hale is located in the middle of northeastern hardwood forests, and the material for our fine wood products comes from a 75-mile radius around our facility. We're interested in respon- sible forest management, and Hale is FSC-certified. Hale Manufacturing is also the orig- inator of the barrister bookcase, a modu- lar system with stackable units. We were also the first to introduce seven-foot-high bookcases in the '60s. HDSD: Describe your company's cur- rent marketing strategy. JB: Currently our independent repre- sentatives are responsible for most of our sales. Office products is a big mar- Hale Manufacturing ( Cont'd. from p. 1) ket for us, as are schools and universi- ties. We engage in trade advertising and have a presence on Facebook. And of course, a great deal of information can be found on our website, www.halesince1907.com. HDSD: Tell our readers about the new product you're introducing at the show. JB: We're very excited to be here to introduce our new and exciting product that will fit a lot of needs. Hale 3 – pro- nounced Hale Cubed – is a brand new addition to our modular storage solution line. It's more contemporary than what we've done in the past. Hale 3 can be changed throughout the life of the prod- uct to meet the needs of the end user. Hale 3 is incredibly customizable and we're confident that it will be a popular choice in modular storage. Visit Hale Manufacturing at booth 7- 7072. In many instances this translates to 'pocket' spaces that are differentiated. Favorite nooks or common areas that are unique and distinct and varied from each other. You need more than foot-candles to create an inviting, creative and collabo- rative work environment. Lighting that defines a space aesthetically and emo- tively is pertinent. This is what Fire Farm does. Healthcare is experiencing a similar shift as individuals are preferring to be seen as guests and clients rather than patients and residents. HDSD: How is Fire Farm Lighting posi- tioned to fill this expanding need? AP: Fire Farm creates beautiful lighting solutions. Our company focus has always been on the artistic use of light and form to define environments. We care about the quality of the light as much as the beauty of the object we are making. Our background in theatrical lighting and experience in the residential and hospi- tality market means we understand this challenge and have developed the skills to meet it. We make everything here in the United States in a small town in Iowa. We moved our operation from California about 12 years ago specifically so that we could continue manufacturing in the U.S. even as most other lighting manufactur- ers shifted to overseas production. HDSD: Why is domestic fabrication sig- nificant to what Fire Farm offers? AP: Well, quite frankly, we have imme- Fire Farm Lighting ( Cont'd. from p. 1) diate control over our quality and serv- ice and are fully accountable. Development and lead times are very competitive. We offer full-service cus- tom fabrication and an established product line to architecture and interior design professionals. Designers recog- nize that nothing distinguishes a project and sets it above the crowd than provid- ing one-of-a-kind custom solutions that express their intent rather than off-the- shelf products that they have to design around or fit in. HDSD: Are you finding a positive response to Fire Farm's presence at the show? AP: Well, we're back, aren't we! We were really excited at the opportunities that developed from the show last year and are really looking forward to seeing what happens this time around. One surprise this past summer was the demand for our private-label manu- facturing and distribution services that we encountered from other manufactur- ers exhibiting at the show. They want to add lighting to their portfolio but are wary of the set-up and development curve required to bring it to market. Fire Farm provides development, inventory and distribution services that short-cut the concept-to-market lead time in a safe, scalable, domestic and reliable way. Conversely, we are finding interest from other lighting companies to develop brand-specific lighting products for their lines as well. This is not something we actively advertise, but it is a fast-growing segment of what we offer. Visit Fire Farm at booth 8-1089. Every day, the Willow Tex design team evaluates the latest color trends, tex- tures and embossed patterns in order to provide its customers with a fresh and exciting variety of up to date products. Upon opening, it will be encouraging individual clients, design teams and com- panies to let the company know what styles, colors and patterns they would like Willow Tex to produce. A key tenet to the Willow Tex business is cooperation with and listening to customer needs, and its new manufacturing facility was designed to do just that – build premium products Willow Tex ( Cont'd. from p. 1) that meet its customers' specific needs. With people becoming more and more conscious of where their products are coming from, "Made in the USA" has become more than just a slogan. It's a movement to restore America, and it's one that Willow Tex is proud to stand behind. With its production moving to the U.S.A, you and your teams will have a unique manufacturing partner in your "backyard," which will drive down costs and lead times while still providing excellent customer service.
