This process allowed Insulated Wire to manufacture products of unprecedented reliability along with smaller diameters. Combining the lamination process with a patented shield design allowed Insulated Wire to become one of the leaders in low loss microwave transmis- sion lines, utilizing both solid and expanded PTFE dielectrics. This combi- nation of features allowed Insulated Wire to produce microwave cables with the lowest attenuation loss per foot in the industry. In 1988, Insulated Wire expanded its operations and created the IW Microwave Products Division. Insulated Wire has produced both wire and cable to serve medical, geophysical, defense, telecommunications, data and instrumentation markets. IW strives to stay ahead of the ever-changing military/commercial microwave markets by implementing new products and processes. These include cables with stable phase per- formance over both temperature and flexure, and our Tuf-Flex™ cables, which offer compression resistance up to 250 pounds per linear inch, polyurethane jacketed cables for low smoke/zero halogen applications and stranded center conductor cable for increased flexibility. Its most recent development is the introduction of a family of high performance 75 Ohm cables. Seventy-five Ohm BNC and N connectors as well as precision 75 Ohm N connectors are available for attachment to these cables. This devel- opment was initiated due to the demands for better cable to support the state of the art high speed and broad- IW's Microwave Products ( Cont'd. from p. 1) band systems being introduced. Some of these cables have already been used in the video tracking and surveillance areas of UAVs. IW has developed spe- cial procedures to work with the increasing demand for smaller cables and connectors without compromising performance. Each cable assembly is manufac- tured under strict process controls in accordance with IPC-WHMA-A-620 procedures. IW offers measurements of return loss, insertion loss, phase match- ing, time delay and amplitude matching up to 67 GHz. In addition, testing for humidity, salt spray, vibration, thermal shock, flexure and hydrostatic pressure, among others, can be conducted either in-house or in an approved laboratory environment. IW's engineering staff can help with questions that may occur during any phase of a project. This includes assis- tance for cable/connector configuration in racks, black boxes and other systems where transmission line performance is critical, specialized custom designs and anything inbetween. IW can also be on- site to help with cable routing and instal- lation. Engineering support is also avail- able for optimal cable/connector selec- tion for unique applications. The new QMOD-SDI 2 takes the revolution to the next level – the ability to distribute two SDI programs over RF and IPTV sys- tems – all for less cost than the original QMOD-SDI. Sites are no longer limited to using SDI for distribution. While SDI is great for production, expensive distribution amps and interfaces are needed for others to view. RF channels can travel over miles of coax and fiber interfaces, and can handle hundreds of channels at the same time. A complex router and control system isn't required – everyone knows how to change TV channels. Here's how the new technology works: Two SDI feeds are encoded into QMOD-SD1 2 ( Cont'd. from p. 1) two programs within one MPEG-2 stream (called a Transport Stream because it carries more than one video). If Dolby AC-3 audio encoding or cap- tioning is embedded in the SDI feed, those will be added to the programs as well. If all that sounds a lot like IPTV, it's because both RF and IP use the same dig- ital MPEG-2 stream. The encoder then passes the stream to a QAM processor, and then sent as an RF channel. The same stream can also be sent from the QMOD's Ethernet port to IPTV players on the network. In the future, MPEG-4 will be added as an encoding choice. The revolution doesn't stop there; other QMOD HD modulators/IPTV encoders can distribute digital signage, component and HDMI media sources. Easy to say, tricky to do, con- sidering the proliferation of formats out there. So on the last day of NAB 2013, Archimedia's co-founders – industry veterans who developed one of the first JPEG2000 encoders almost a decade ago, then won a tech- nical Emmy for the SAMMA video- tape migration process – decided to create a VTR for file-based workflows. And we've done it. Our player sup- ports all common master formats in use around the world today and con- tains features that make it a true 4K- era replacement for videotape machines for master-grade QC and archiving functions. Now, the Library of Congress has us developing its test patterns for the new era. Three major studios use our player in 2K and 4K cinema produc- tion. Three major postproduction providers, five major institutional archives and now even award-winning independent film- makers are finding us. What's next? Now that we've creat- ed the precision player for all formats and the end of the physical VTR is upon us, we're working on the other half of the VTR concept – the recorder – for formats up to 4K. BSD: What would you say makes your company unique? MG: Saying we'll support any format is a bold move, but we know we have the knowledge and experience to make it true. But it's more than format support. Try enough free and open-source media players, and eventually you'll Archimedia ( Cont'd. from p. 1) find one for the format you have in hand. But is that player suitable for a media professional? Does it have SDI and VANC insertion? Jog/shuttle support and Sony 9-pin protocol VTR emulation? Interlacing and deinterlacing tools? HDMI support to make video play at native frame rates? Test patterns and advanced test patterns for the digital expert dealing with lip sync, UHD, digital cinema, wide dynamic ranges, color volumes and all the standards out there now? Gamma tools so that XYZ color vol- umes can play on RGB projectors and SDI infrastructures? JPEG2000 quality adjustments so that CPUs can handle JPEG2000's high computation- al needs? Workstations designed to deal with high-speed storage require- ments of DPX and TIFF, especially in UHD and 4K cinema? Audio router and channel mutes to deal with multichannel formats and 5.1? Ours does. Because simply 'playing' on a computer screen is not enough for a media professional.
