BSD: What benefits does the HDBaseT technology offer to the broadcasting market? MR: For years, the broadcasting market has been limited to an SDI-based infra- structure that requires the use of expen- sive and unwieldy coax cables. HDBaseT enables the transition to a LAN-based infrastructure, which has become the pre- ferred physical infrastructure for many commercial markets. Using a single cable solution that enables transmission over long distances significantly reduces installation costs and greatly simplifies the process. In addition to pulling only one cable, the cable itself is easy to terminate in the field, and with no modifications required to the standard connector locking mecha- nism, retains its plug-and-play feature. BSD: Are HDBaseT-enabled products available today? MR: Absolutely. HDBaseT has become a global digital connectivity standard with a large and varied product ecosys- tem that includes video distribution equipment, displays, projectors and AV receivers from more than 80 manufac- turers. The HDBaseT Alliance booth at the NAB Show [#SU 11914] will feature live demonstrations of how HDBaseT can deliver 4K video over a single cable over long distances to significantly reduce the costs and complexities of installations. These demonstrations will be based on products by several HDBaseT Alliance members and part- HDBaseT ( Cont'd. from p. 1) ners including: Apantac, Gefen, Keisoku, Kramer and Muxlab. Additionally, the Alliance will show- case new HDBaseT enabled displays from leading manufacturers such as Panasonic, NEC, Samsung and Primeview. These displays are less costly than the typical HD-SDI displays and can be ideal for control rooms and broadcast- ing studios. BSD: So the HDBaseT technology already has a firm foothold in the broad- casting market? MR: Yes, a number of Alliance members manufacture extenders, displays and other HDBaseT products that are increas- ingly being used in broadcasting installa- tions. HDBaseT is now a global standard for digital connectivity in the profession- al A/V market, and the broadcasting industry can refer to the pro-AV market as a model for how to leverage HDBaseT to simplify the installation process for a wide range of projects. BSD: What is the HDBaseT Alliance? MR: The Alliance is a consortium of leading cross-industry companies formed to promote and standardize HDBaseT technology. It was founded in 2010 by LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures and Valens, the developer of the HDBaseT chipset. More than 80 companies are members, and that number continues to grow. Members play a piv- otal role in defining the future of multi- media transmission and data communica- tion in the consumer electronics and con- tent provider industries. For additional information, check out www.HDBaseT.org or stop by booth #SU11914. This includes full live cable channel line- ups, single or multiple live personal/group chatting/conferencing, movies, web surfing, texting, blogging, video games and DVR all in HD on simultaneous multiple PIP (picture-in- picture) expandable/shrinking/movable floating screens, buy now option with advanced programming guide, scrolling newsfeeds and alerts all on one site. The timing is excellent for GEM to capitalize on the new age of social multi- tasking TV, as it is unrivaled. Watching TV on a digital device is growing rapid- ly. In 2012, the average number of min- utes watched on a computer or other dig- ital device was 220 minutes. That num- ber is projected to grow in 2015 to a stag- gering 450 minutes worldwide. It is get- ting more prevalent for users to be on multiple devices at all times. Today's dig- ital device addiction demands simplifica- tion of the chaotic multiple device view- ing experience. GIGANETTV provides the solution. Viewers are frustrated with live televi- sion. It hasn't kept up with the pace of innovation. On a computer, a user can Skype, email and watch a video, but TV just beams at you. Viewers unsuccessful- ly attempt to circumvent this frustration by using a second or third screened device. GIGANETTV is the only service which meets this huge demand head-on. It is the only technology created to pro- vide a user-friendly social service plat- form which combines the most used fea- tures simultaneously all on one site. G IGANETTV ( Cont'd. from p. 1) GEM is in the process of licensing "White Labeling," the unique platform technology as a tool to the global cable, satellite distributors and other content providers who are losing a significant number of subscribers and require a new way to rebuild their subscriber base. GIGANETTV is their solution. The rev- enue and growth potential is quite sub- stantial, especially since it is not a matter of "if they want it." It is rather that "they need it," and they need it right now. GIGANETTV provides significant advantages over existing technologies or so called online video services. GEM's business model is robust, sustainable and scalable, and meets the needs and requirements of at least four of the oper- ating constituents: consumers, program- ming/content providers, other video dis- tributors and advertisers. While the video online marketplace has grown signifi- cantly, it's very much in its infancy stage. Video doesn't mean just live cable pro- gramming, and even the goliaths that have entered this space have faced many issues that have prevented them from reaching full potential. Other competitors have not taken off and certainly have not created the dynamic combination of innovative features that GEM has, nor have they attracted the majority of live cable programming. This process increases the available system bandwidth, allowing networks to add channels and streams on their existing system. Additional benefit is gained with 4K sources by delivering a 1080p parallel feed at no extra bandwidth cost. Meets Exploding Demand for Bandwidth from Broadcast, Cable, Satellite, Servers, Video Conferencing and More "Demand for video bandwidth is dou- bling every three years, yet network com- pression efficiency doubles every 10 years," said company Founder Yves Faroudja. "It is clear that a fundamental change must be made in how networks operate. Our new technology provides a solution for this today, easily integrates into existing systems and is fully compat- ible with future compression schemes (HEVC). Our approach is orthogonal to compression standards." Target applications for the products include any situation where large amounts of video data must be managed, such as cable and satellite networks, Over-the-Air broadcasters, Internet- based Video-on-Demand services, Cloud-based streaming and server stor- age, Digital Cinema production, as well as Telepresence and Smart device-based video conferencing. The VBR100 products can easily be integrated into existing distribution and storage facilities and operate in tandem with the compression-decompression schemes in Faroudja Enterprises ( Cont'd. from p. 1) use as well as any future compression for- mats. The products are configurable to match the needs of the application. NAB attendees are encouraged to come by the Wynn suites to experience first-hand demonstrations of streaming 1080p, 4K and video conferencing appli- cations. BSD: Can you tell me a little about the history of Technostrobe? FL: Of course. Guy Buisson, a success- ful engineer, founded the company in 2001. His objective was to provide the best and most innovative lighting tech- nologies. That is exactly what Technostrobe has provided since its beginnings. We have developed products like a GPS Synchronization System for the wind farm industry and the first White/Red High Intensity System for tall towers near urban areas. BSD: What other company goals does Technostrobe have? FL: We constantly seek to surpass cus- tomer expectations. Technostrobe receives many specialized requests from clients, and we make sure to incorporate their considerations into the develop- ment of our products. Broadcasters especially have unique lighting needs. We know this and respond accordingly, providing a product that best suits their needs. Our recognition of quality stems Technostrobe ( Cont'd. from p. 1) from projects completed for broadcast- ers such as CTV, CBC, Shaw Broadcasting and Rogers. BSD: What do you plan to present at the show? FL: We are launching a new LED high intensity lighting system designed for the tallest towers. This requires the most powerful and reliable lights on the mar- ket. It is our job to help broadcast engi- neers ensure that their towers are well protected, and more importantly, people are protected. This is exactly what we plan to provide with our new lighting system. This system uses LED lights, a product very new to this industry seg- ment. Traditionally, these systems uti- lized strobe technology [xenon lights]. The new LED based system is a huge improvement in terms of reliability and maintenance savings. BSD: What makes Technostrobe unique? FL: The fact that Technostrobe is dynamic, always coming up with new ways to help companies reach their objectives.
