Oser As we go to press on this issue of Kitchenware News & Housewares Review, it's shirt- sleeve weather outside our publishing office in Tucson, Ariz. and we're packing our winter woolies for the trip to Chicago for the International Home + Housewares Show, that annual festival of all the hardware, stoneware and culinary paraphernalia that completes our kitchens, cleans our countertops, contains our quinoa and provides us with inspiration for the next year. We are also looking forward to renewing our acquaintance with some of the great kitchenware retailers we met at last year's show and who have graced our pages in the months since. Last May, we introduced you to Margaret Junkhan, who owns the Cooks' Emporium in Ames, Iowa, where you can get a cooking lesson, a recipe, a tasting of what was prepared for the class and a discount coupon for a nominal fee. June's retailer of the month was the Swiss Knife Shop, an online retailer that started as a seller of Victorinox Swiss Army Knives and has gone on to expand its product line to include a wide range of kitchen cutlery along with knives designed for hunters, hikers and everyone else who needs a blade. We met Heather Elmer, the Swiss Knife Shop's marketing manager, last year at a party hosted by WÜSTHOF, which is celebrating its bicentennial year this year. In July, we billed Granada Gourmet, Patti Surguine's store in Ormond Beach, Fla. as the life of the party, and in the months since then, Patti has reminded us how true that was. She posted pictures of her annual Halloween Reveal bash that make us wish we could have been there, and we certainly understand why her local foodies haunt her store. We met Susan Dolinar and her husband at a reception thrown by Victorinox and loved her story about her store in Winchester, Va., which is close enough to Washington, D.C. for commuters to the city but far enough away to satisfy folks who prefer a rural life among neighbors they know. Nibblins started as a holiday season cart offering gourmet food products in a local mall and is now a thriving 4,500 square foot store offering both kitchenware and house-made fudge that Susan makes herself in a nearby commercial kitchen. We could go on and on like this, but we will instead invite you instead to peruse the pages of those back issues of Kitchenware News & Housewares Review that you have stashed on a shelf somewhere once you've finished reading this issue, in which you will be introduced to Jim Russo, who owns Executive Chef, Hawaii's premier tool store for cooks. You'll also see a great collection of ideas to offer the folks who are taking some of their home entertaining out onto the patio, the terrace or the backyard, depending on where you live; a preview of the New York Tabletop Show, coming up in April – just in case there IS life after the IH+HS; and some meditations on the past, present and future of the lunchbox.
