Small Electrics SMALL ELECTRICS 1 6 KITCHENWARE NEWS & HOUSEWARES REVIEW n APRIL 2014 n www.kitchenwarenews.com Sponsored by BY SAM RUDDICK The T-fal Ice Cream Maker, which retails for $37.90, can make a liter of ice cream, gelato, or frozen yogurt in 20-30 minutes. Like other ice cream makers, it features removable, easy-to-clean parts. It also has a transp arent cover with an opening so you can add ingredients like nuts, chocolate chips orpeaches. You can't throw big chunks of fruit into the machine, but that's true of any counter-top ice cream maker: it 's important to cut your ingredients into smaller pieces when you're working with a machine that size. The Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream and Sorbet Maker (model no. ICE-21) is more expensive than the T-fal, at an average retail price of $59.95, but with a 1 ½ quart capacity, it 's a little larger than the T-fal, and on average it 's a little faster, too: Cuisinart's new mixing paddle can get the job in done in 20 minutes or less. Hamilton Beach's 68321Z Ice Cream Maker has a 1 ½ quart capacity, as well, but it 's slower than the Cuisinart, taking anywhere from 25-40 minutes to complete a batch. Many consumers might see that as a relatively inconsequential difference, of course, particular offset by the fact that, at a suggested retail price of $34.99, the Hamilton Beach 68321Z is 25 dollars cheaper. But as a representative sample of what 's available, these ice cream makers offer a similar range of options: the distance between price points is relatively narrow, the variance in features slight. That's not to say that there are no clear advantages to one model or another, but rather that the advantages depend on your perspective. W hat 's more important: the size of the machine, the speed, or the price? Either way, you can start a batch of homemade ice cream and eat it before you can finish an episode of American Idol. And, since all of these machines are relatively quiet compared to their 20th Century counterparts, you might even be able to hear the show. Ice Cream Makers: Fast, Cheap and (almost) Quiet Peugeot will introduce two new Alaska "Gourmet Edition" Sets at the 2014 International Home + Housewares Show, both featuring premium electric mills in Peugeot's iconic Alaska design. The Alaska Duo Quartz set pairs a salt and pepper mill, and the Alaska Trio features a salt mill, pepper mill and nutmeg mill. Peugeot uses different mechanisms for each ingredient for the utmost in flavor and texture. These eye-catching mills – available in shiny contemporary shades of quartz or white – feature clean lines and rounded edges reminiscent of the pure, refreshing, pristine beauty of the Alaskan landscape. The pepper mill grind is adjustable from fine to coarse, and the salt and nutmeg mills are set at the perfect grind for finely ground spices and maximum flavor. Electric mills allow better control of output, which is ideal for those who don't want too much salt. The electric button makes it easy to grind, which will be especially appreciated by people with arthritis. The ergonomic shape, combined with a large button to initiate grinding, makes them easy to use. An acr ylic window showcases ingredients, and each window is marked with an "S" "P" or "N" as a guide. Small, subtle icons signify whether the mill is in locked or unlocked position. The Alaska Mills, which are 7" tall, come filled with peppercorns, salt or whole nutmeg. The top is made of polycarbonate; the bottom is made of ABS; and the button is made of ABS finished as brushed steel. The set comes complete with six batteries for each mill. Both sets come in attractive gift boxes with magnetic closure that makes them suitable gifts for anyone who is passionate about cooking and the beauty of modern art. Suggested retail prices are $140 for the Peugeot Alaska Duo Quartz and $214 for the Peugeot Alaska Trio. Both are available for immediate shipment. Made in France, Peugeot mills are noted for their consistent high-output grind, fully adjustable mechanism with precision adjustments, and spice-specific mechanisms for unsurpassed performance.
