ALEMITE DETAILS GREASE GUN SAFETY PROCEDURES By Jerry Shew, Principal Engineer, Alemite LLC All machinery must be lubricated to ensure smooth operation and long service life. From manufacturing to vehicle serv- ice, grease guns are a common way to achieve proper lubrication. Alemite offers a comprehensive line of grease guns rang- ing from manual to battery-operated tools and provides the expertise to help you purchase the correct tool for the job. Though use of grease guns is wide- spread, these tools deserve your respect and should be used according to the man- ufacturer's guidelines to avoid injury. Operators should be trained on each piece of equipment to be lubricated, as well as each grease gun that will be used. Do not apply lubricants to a machine in operation unless the fittings are located in a safe place. Never reach over, under, through or past moving parts to complete your task. Regardless of which grease gun you use, the high pressure developed by the tool should be considered. High-pressure injection injuries may be caused by the accidental injection of grease, oil or sol- vent through the skin and into the under- lying tissue. Generally, fingers or hands experience this type of injury, and it is most likely to occur when a hose rup- tures. Some lubrication applications require needle-type accessories that can lead to an injury if used improperly. An injection injury may be small and essentially painless, and the injured per- son may be tempted to continue working. However, if you receive any type of injection injury, you should seek medical attention immediately. The lubricant will need to be removed and treatment initiat- ed to prevent infection. To minimize risk, you should choose the right tool for the job. Alemite represen- tatives can assist you in pur- chasing the appropriate grease gun to meet your needs. Never change the configuration of a grease gun for a purpose other than that for which it was intended. Be certain all components utilized are rated for the amount of pressure you will be develop- ing. You should use only hoses specified by the grease gun manufacturer. It is essential that you inspect the hose before each use. If there are any signs of wear or damage on the hose, do not use it. When loading a grease cartridge, make sure the follower rod is securely latched to the end cap so that it doesn't spring back unexpectedly. Use care when removing the pull-tab on the cartridge to prevent getting cut by the tab's sharp edges. Always aim the grease coupler away from your body when loading and priming a grease gun. Read and follow the manu- facturer's instructions before using your grease gun. Avoid kinking hoses as this can make them more susceptible to rup- tures. Be sure to label your grease gun so that you can identify the type of grease in that particular gun. All repairs should be performed by a qualified technician who uses only original replacement parts. Finally, after perform- ing lubrication tasks, be sure to wash your hands to remove any chemical residue.
