Each colorful, unique piece in the bird series embod- ies a word that represents the meaning of that specific bird to Altshuler. One of the new pieces being used for the 2013 collection is a Yellow Grosbeak painting called "Inspiration," which refers to her love of birds and how the idea for painting the colorful creatures came into fruition. "One of the first birds that came to my feeder in North Carolina and start- ed my investigation was the Yellow Grosbeak," said Altshuler. "You can't miss them in North Carolina, they are so gorgeous! The more they came, the more I wanted to paint them." One bird painting led to the next and the series increased to include hummingbirds, bluebirds, cardinals, carolina songbirds and chickadees. "Hummingbirds are like little fairies to me," Altshuler said. "They are so magical, which is why "Imagination" is what I chose for them." Alshuler divides her time between her Asheville, N.C. studio and South Florida, where she is an art teacher.
