An interview with Andrew Upton – Vice President, Seaward Solar SPDN: Tell our readers about your company. AU: Seaward Solar is a leading manufacturer of electri- cal test instruments designed to help Solar PV Installers work more efficiently and safely. As a division of Seaward Group USA, our heritage is about electrical safety testing, so taking that expertise and bringing it to the Solar Industry has been a very exciting opportunity. SPDN: What particular product will you be showcasing at Intersolar USA? AU: My company will be exhibiting its latest range of electrical testers, especially the PV150 Solarlink Installation Kit. This kit is designed to help installers carry out the important range of electrical safety tests that should be done at the time of a PV Installation, and also during periodic inspection of solar arrays. Our products were developed in conjunction with the development of IEC 62446, which has been adopted by many countries, SEAWARD BRINGS ELECTRICAL SAFETY EXPERTISE TO THE SOLAR INDUSTRY An interview with Jason Ianni, CEO/President, M BAR C Construction, Inc. SPDN: Tell our readers about your company. What's your main line of business? JI: M BAR C Construction Inc is a design/build steel contractor offering a wide array of custom-built solar structures including solar carports and ground mounts of any size and configuration. We work with end users, solar integrators and contractors for any size project. SPDN: What would you say makes your company unique? JI: We are family owned and operated, with over 75 full-time employees. In just the past three years, M BAR C has grown by more than 550 percent. We've built over 125 MW of solar structures, and we have multiple fully trained crews ready to build anywhere across the west- ern United States. SPDN: What was the most significant event or series Depending on your appli- cation requirements, Oriel Instruments provide a variety of solar simula- tors to fit your needs. Oriel "Sol" series simulators offer standards compli- ance to the most current standards from the ASTM, IEC, and JIS with an area of illumination that works for your samples. If your application is in the ultra- violet (UV), Oriel offers the COLIPA standard's compliant Sol-UV solar simulators. If your applica- tion doesn't have stringent requirements, Oriel also offers a variety of large area solar flood sources with a variety of lamp options and power ranging from 100 to 1600W. Solar Simulator Basics A solar simulator is a light source that approximates the illumination of natural sunlight. Solar simulators with various tailored spectral output are used to to test a variety of samples including but not limited to solar cells, sun screen (SPF), materials photo-stabili- ty, and other samples (in vivo or in vitro) under con- trolled, repeatable, laboratory conditions. An interview with Bill Radvak President and CEO of American Vanadium Corp. SPDN: Tell our readers about your company. What's your main line of business? BR: American Vanadium is a leading energy storage company that has the only widely available, commer- cially ready vanadium redox flow battery. SPDN: What would you say makes your company unique? BR: There are two top concerns that energy storage cus- tomers have: product track-record and manufacturer's financial muscle. Our partnership with Gildemeister covers both those concerns in spades. Gildemeister is a 150 year old German industrial company that is a world leader in its heavy industry business. They have been able to offer an energy storage system that hasn't had a failure in two years. Given the financial strength of Gildemeister and the proven reliability of the CellCube, An interview with Dr. Charles Turk, President and CEO of OAI SPDN: How is OAI's solar simulation and test business faring in this business environment? CT: Our solar simulators and test products continue to grow at a double digit rate. The solar products are out- performing our semiconductor, MEMs, and microfluidic exposure systems. SPDN: What is unique about OAI's products or approach that has been so effective in generating the increase in solar simulator sales? CT: With 40 years of optical design experience, OAI's solar simulators and I-V test products have top specifi- cations and are backed by our focus on customer support and service. We have developed advanced specifications for the newly developing multi-junction and CPV mar- kets as well as DSSC and organics. The industry's need for a solution to this problem was brought home to Wiener and Quickscrews Vice President Rick Gentry as they conducted needs assessment interviews with solar installers in the field. "One of the first things we were shown on a roof was the way installers were connect- ing to the joists on asphalt roofs," said Wiener, "but the products they were using were bulky, expensive, difficult to work with and non-removable." "This is a particular problem because if there is ever a reason to take that product off, move the racks, or replace the roof, the installer and customer would be in a heap of trou- ble because the products could only be cut off, not removed," he continued. "The question I wanted to answer was this: How do I provide a connection to a roof that's 100 Continued on Page 21 Continued on Page 21 Continued on Page 21 Continued on Page 19 Continued on Page 19 M BAR C CEO NAMED CALIFORNIA SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR ORIEL INSTRUMENTS: 40+ YEARS OF PROVEN PERFORMANCE OAI: MARKET-DRIVEN, CUSTOMER-FOCUSED THE CELLCUBE OFFERS RELIABLE BULK ENERGY STORAGE QUICKSCREWS FASTENERS CONNECT SOLAR MOUNTS TO WOODEN ROOF JOISTS O s e r C o m m u n i c a t i o n s G r o u p S a n F r a n c i s c o T h u r s d a y, J u l y 1 1 , 2 0 1 3 AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION NOT AFFILIATED WITH INTERSOLAR
