W i r e l e s s W o r l d W e d n e s d a y, M a y 2 2 , 2 0 1 3 1 0 AEROFLEX ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST TDD-FDD HANDOVER USING LTE CAPACITY TEST SYSTEM The Aeroflex E500 LTE Capacity Test System is the industry's first capacity tester to successfully hand over data serv- ices between TDD and FDD networks. Network operators around the world are already commissioning dual-standard networks as part of the rapid expansion in TD-LTE (LTE TDD) networks. The E500's handover capability is therefore crucial for both operators and network suppliers testing TDD/FDD networks. The Aeroflex E500 LTE Capacity Test system enables operators to confirm the operation and performance of their network before releasing into the field. The capacity test system achieves this by enabling the network to be loaded with hundreds to tens of thousands of UEs (user equipment), each capable of emulat- ing different radio fading profiles with varying data service mixes in a multi-cell environment. The E500 exploits the Aeroflex TM500 Test Mobile platform, the de facto industry standard for LTE and LTE-A base station and network testing. Verifying end-user performance when calls are handed over between FDD and TDD networks is crucial for opera- tors to deliver a good customer experi- ence," said Nick Carter, Senior Product Manager at Aeroflex. "Aeroflex is com- mitted to providing operators with the key underlying functionality together with real-world end-to-end test capability to deliver robust LTE networks. Converged TDD/FDD networks allow mobile operators to maximize the benefits from their spectrum investments and hence provide the best quality serv- ice for their customers. Although the TD- LTE market is being driven by China, significant LTE TDD network launches have already taken place in Brazil, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, while operators in Poland, Sweden, and the USA are launching dual standard FDD and TDD LTE networks. "Dual-standard TDD/FDD LTE net- works are likely to grow in importance towards the end of this decade, as opera- tors start running out of spectrum," said Caroline Gabriel, Research Director at Maravedis Rethink. "They will need to make the best use of this scarce resource, and this will include utilizing bands of unpaired spectrum. Even networks that are currently FDD only may begin to use TDD for offloading. According to ARCchart, there are already more than 50 mobile operators worldwide committed to TDD technology for LTE, and TD-LTE subscriptions are forecast to exceed 500 million by 2017. ARCchart reports that most of the TD- LTE compatible mobile devices launched commercially to date support both FDD and TDD modes of operation. The growth in this market is fueled by the large amount of unpaired spectrum designated for TDD usage and the lower deployment costs offered by TDD technology. M-HEALTH: OPPORTUNITIES FOR MOBILE OPERATOR By Harry Wang, Director, Health and Mobile Product Research, Parks Associates Parks Associates defines mobile health (m-health) as health applications and services through mobile communication platforms. By our estimates, m-health revenues exceeded $500 million in 2011 and will triple by the year 2015. Mobile operators have a significant stake in the m-health industry. They sup- ply the infrastructure and support various mobile platforms; therefore, healthy growth in the m-health market will drive demand for their products and services. Mobile operators may even play a role as system integrators and service enablers, thus entitling their businesses to a bigger share of the m-health revenue stream. There are multiple business opportu- nities for mobile operators in the mobile health sector. They can generate revenues by serving healthcare organizations through their enterprise mobile voice and data services. Health IT adoption, partic- ularly recent EMR and HIE initiatives from large healthcare organizations, offers new growth opportunities in areas such as enterprise data storage and host- ing, opening revenue opportunities in storage and service fees. Medical device manufacturers use operators for device connectivity, configuration, activation, and management support, generating rev- enues through wholesale mobile data and device management/support fees. Operators can deliver mobile health applications and services directly to the end user. These new value-added servic- es could be software as a service or deliv- ered through the mobile broadband net- work. One significant opportunity for oper- ators, still in its early stages, is in the emergence of machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity in the consumer health market. A growing number of health-related devices and applications require reliable and always-on network connectivity, and many notable operators have supported such applications in this sector: AT&T and Vodafone support mobile health monitoring devices that track patients' heart health and other related vital signs for Boston Scientific; T-Mobile, through cus- tomer BeClose, supports connect- ed body and home sensors that track a senior's in-home activity, detect acciden- tal falls, and improve the overall aging- in-place experience; Orange and Sprint support vital-sign monitoring devices for IDEAL LIFE that can track and help manage chronic conditions such as dia- betes and congested heart failure; Sprint, through BodyMedia, supports connected fitness devices that collect and track fit- ness progress toward consumers' estab- lished goals; AT&T, through its customer Vitality, offers a connected pill box that tracks medication usage, offers reminders, and requests prescription refills; Telenor supports a wireless glu- cose meter, offered through Telcare, that integrates with clinical servers, electron- ic health records, and multiple smart- phone apps for diabetes management. For mobile operators, capitalizing on the M2M opportunity in the consumer health market requires patience and focus. They need to establish relationships with device makers as well as with emerging players that are disrupting the traditional medical device market. New players such as CardioNet (arrhythmia monitoring), Dexcom (continuous glucose meter and monitoring), Vitality (connected pill box), Ideal Life (networked vital sign monitoring), and LogicMark (mobile PERS) are challenging established mar- ket leaders―brands like Philips, Medtronic, Omron, and Linear. Whether established or emerging, these health business clients value cellu- lar coverage and quality of service. They need a network operator that can cover patients living in rural areas, provide strong connections for timely reporting, and ensure network reliability in life-or- death situations. These considerations and requirements are the keys for mobile carriers in winning customers.
