NW: Traditionally, AREAWARE's mar- keting strategy has been to reach a select group of design enthusiasts. More recent- ly, we have endeavored to expand our reach by offering more price-sensitive items. To support this growth and to com- municate to a larger audience, we are making greater use of social media and expanding our public relations outreach. OSD: Are you introducing any new products? NW: Yes, we introduce new products twice a year, which is always exciting for us, and hopefully exciting to others. At NY Now, we are showing a magnet- ized beechwood container titled Diamond Box, Round Cut from the Brooklyn-based design team, Fort Standard. It creates the perfect hide- away for anything you value or want to keep out of sight. Building on the theme of hidden treasures, Fort Standard also designed Prism Corkscrew, which looks like a sculptural piece of wood but serves an important function! The Little Big Trivet, by Alissia Melka- Teichroew, is simply genius. It is an expandable trivet with adjustable dow- els on a wax cord. Its size can be altered to fit everything from a teapot to a large casserole dish. We are also debuting a brainteaser from internationally renowned cartoonist-artist-filmmaker- musician Richard McGuire. It is really eye-catching and is a perfect gift. Everyone who's seen it is amused. Then again, I think you could say that about AREAWARE (Cont'd. from p. 1) most of our products. OSD: What products do you see as being hottest this year? NW: Other than our perennially popular Cubebot ® collection, Harry Allen's Reality Series continues to do extraordi- narily well. His newest design, Box Turtle Box, may pull away from the pack. People love turtles. Harry's design is sampled from an actual turtle, so it is meticulously detailed. And, when people realize the shell lifts up to reveal a hidden compartment, they are delighted. OSD: What would you say makes your company unique? NW: AREAWARE produces everyday objects that are functional and unusual. The items we offer are carefully curated and thoughtful, and they often elicit a strong emotional response. OSD: What is the nature of your distri- bution? NW: Our products are offered on our website, www.areaware.com, and we also sell to specialty and museum shops worldwide. Customers outside of the USA account for almost 50 percent of our sales. OSD: Where can our readers find out more about your company? NW: Readers can find information about us on our website, www.areaware.com, by visiting us at NY NOW in either of our booths (Accent on Design #4002 or Baby & Child #7119), or by calling us at 800-783-5683. collection called Eternal Entertaining. PV: The hide rugs are unique-- they are not your common variety, free- form hides, or square of hides in a patchwork. Expert artists and artisans take the luxurious texture and colors of genuine hair-on hides and hand-cut them into amazing designs. They trans- form them into spectacular, distinctive rugs with exquisite patterns and color combinations. Most of the line is made of colors of natural hides. But one seg- ment consists of hides that are dyed, and then treated with various artisan techniques, which turn them into something totally splendid. Each rug is totally unique and adds a natural, rich and colorful, modern element that will dress any space. We also asked the same artisans in India to make hide pil- lows using some of the same magnifi- cent patterns. These rugs and pillows are indeed pieces of art from India's countryside. Madisons (Cont'd. from p. 1) We love color, and nothing is more beautifully colored than the saris worn by Indian women. When we visited India, we fell in love with the sari silk rugs which are made from the rem- nants of the most beautiful colored sari silks. They are hand-woven into one- of-a-kind rugs with an array of vibrant colors that will enliven any room, office, bedroom or study. So we decid- ed to include the sari silk rugs in our product line as well. . OSD: What has been the reception to your hide rugs since your introduction? PV: The reception has been nothing short of astounding. Without excep- tion, everyone who has visited our booth is truly wowed by the beauty and unique patterns. There is great interest in hide rugs and Madisons rugs appeal to designers and customers who are looking for items that that are excep- tional and of high quality. We invite anyone to come to our booth at the NY Now Show (Booth 1679) and see for themselves how truly unique and distinguishing each of our rugs are.
