Jodi L. Berg, President and CEO, Vitamix, attributes the company's growth to several factors, including increased awareness among the gener- al public of the link between good nutrition and health, as well as an expanded distribution network. "The understanding of the importance of a whole foods, healthy lifestyle continues to grow. People want to eat healthy, but they do not want to compromise on taste and enjoyment. The Vitamix makes this possible and makes enjoying a healthy cuisine sustainable," Berg said. "Internationally and domestically, we have continued to expand our com- mercial presence in large chains, as well as our distribution into more retail doors, such as Harrods and John Lewis in the U.K.," Berg added. "Similarly in the U.S., Vitamix currently services some of largest coffee chains and quick service restaurants and is in more than 2,000 retail doors including Williams Sonoma, Bed, Bath & B e y o n d , Crate & B a r r e l , and Sur L a Table." I n f a c t , a v e r a g e growth in net sales the past three years increased significantly, by 41 percent. In 2012 alone, net sales were up 52 percent from 2011. The 51,000-square-foot headquar- ters expansion consists of two phases: a 15,000-square-foot, $2 million expansion of the company's Engineering Department, and an $8 million, three-story, 36,000-square- foot addition that will increase Vitamix's total office, conference and meeting space by more than 20 per- cent. Additional capacity for manufac- turing and assembly, and more ware- housing space for raw materials and finished goods, was also recently obtained in a new space near headquar- ters. The current expansion comes on the heels of a $6 million, 40,000- square-foot expansion completed in 2010, which included a 33,000-square- foot warehouse expansion. The ware- house expansion recently received LEED Silver certification. Vitamix is incorporating green building practices into the current expansion as well. Donoghue & Pivirotto Enterprises Inc., Wexford, Pa., which operates four Arby's stores, performed a two-week audited test on a 10-foot-by-12-foot walk-in cooler at its 3,300-square-foot Arby's in Butler, Pa. After outfitting the walk-in cooler entrance with a Berner air curtain, the results state the refrigeration circuit's compressor ran 1.75 hours less during one week, a 27- percent reduction in compressor run- time and equipment wear-and-tear. The improvement results in nearly 100 fewer operating hours per year for an estimated annual savings of $447 and a 1.6-year payback on a walk-in cooler entrance air curtain. The Berner air curtain also pre- vents food spoilage due to temperature rises by working to maintain the inter- nal temperature of a walk-in cooler during high-traffic moments or when the door is kept open for an extended period of time for loading/unloading; while the door is open, the air curtain works to keep temperatures within the recommended range as dictated by health codes and standard best prac- tices. Due to dealer input that adding an air curtain to a walk-in cooler can be difficult, Berner has designed a kit to simplify the installation process. The ARBY'S FRANCHISEE TEST PROVES AIR CURTAINS IMPROVE WALK-IN COOLER EFFICIENCIES response from customers has been pos- itive. "The Berner walk-in cooler kit made buying and installing the air cur- tain simple; it's nice when a manufac- turer takes the time to consider what all I am going to need when I am out in the field," said Brian P., a contractor. "It helps me keep my costs down for my customers."
