CONSUMERS DEMAND BETTER AUDIO FOR MOBILE ENTERTAINMENT Dolby scientists and technologists spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve the sound of entertainment―from developing better tools for those who are creating content, to working with broadcast, cable, and wireless operators and OTT services providers, to partnering with TV and mobile device manufacturers to ensure the best possible experience. But to understand the importance consumers place on sound when it comes to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, Dolby turned to market researchers at Parks Associates. They surveyed approximately 1,000 smart- phone owners each in the United States, France, Germany, China and South Korea to help Dolby better understand the consumer perspective. Across all countries surveyed, the more smartphone and tablet owners used their device for mobile media, the more likely they were to say that audio quality was a "very important" purchase consid- eration. In fact, 72 percent of heavy mobile media users said audio quality was "very important" compared to just 35 percent of light users. Another important finding that was true across these coun- tries: tablet owners surveyed reported that audio quality was very important when watching movies on their devices. Nearly 60 percent of participants surveyed watch movies on their tablets on a monthly basis and 65 percent deemed audio quality "very important." As the number of mobile devices and competition for consumers worldwide continues to increase and time spent with mobile content con- tinues to grow, it is important for smart- phone and tablet manufacturers to tap into the vast poten- tial of the audio capabilities of their devices for entertain- ment―from the hardware (speakers and amplifiers) to the content (different mixes and volume levels). Device makers like Amazon, ZTE, Huawei and others are already working with Dolby to optimize device audio quality for the best mobile entertainment possible. To take this further and deliver the best possible audio experience on mobile, it also is important to have an end-to-end audio solution. That's why studios like Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have selected Dolby Digital Plus for their UltraViolet libraries. It's why online services worldwide like Netflix, VUDU, HBO Go, Best Buy Cinema Now, PPTV, and LeTV use Dolby Digital Plus to ensure movies sound great on connected TVs, game consoles and mobiles devices. Dolby Digital Plus is also a key element of industry stan- dards including HbbTV and MPEG- DASH for streaming high-quality enter- tainment content. Demand for high-quality entertain- ment across multiple screens will only continue to grow. For more information about Dolby professional solutions, please visit www.dolby.com. 2K, RAW AND MORE: NEW FEATURES RELEASED FOR IO INDUSTRIES 2KSDI CAMERA IO Industries Inc. (Canada) is demon- strating the latest features of the Flare 2KSDI camera including new 2K output formats, improved auto-exposure control and a RAW video mode. The Flare 2KSDI is a compact, POV-style camera with a global shutter CMOS sensor, uncompressed 3G/HD-SDI outputs, a rugged aluminum body and interchange- able lenses. Configuration is easy with the handheld remote control, making the 2KSDI the ultimate mini-camera for live event coverage, television and cinema production, aerial imaging and many other HD video applications. The camera is designed around a 2/3-inch global shutter CMOS sensor (12.7mm diagonal) with a full resolution of 2048 by 1088 pixels. Unlike tradition- al rolling shutter CMOS sensors, global shutter sensors capture motion without wobble distortion or "jello" effect. The 2/3-inch optical format allows a larger pixel design for higher sensitivity, while maintaining the familiar look and depth of field of standard broadcast cameras. For special applications, 2KSDI models are available with monochrome CMOS sensors (no color filter array) providing high optical resolution and enhanced sen- sitivity. All models support single-link HD- SDI output formats including 1280 by 720p (23.98-60), 1920 by 1080p (23.98- 30) and 2048 by 1080p (23.98-30). Single-link 3G-SDI output formats are also supported, including 1920 by 1080p (50-60) and 2048 by 1080p (48-60). All output formats are 10-bit Y'Cb'Cr' with 4:2:2 color sampling, but for a cinema RAW workflow the 10-bit RAW output mode can be enabled. For stereoscopic 3D, live broadcast and other multi- camera applica- tions, a tri-level sync input is pro- vided. The camera uses a standard C- mount allowing many lens options, including a variety of compact C-mount lenses as well as F- mount, B4-mount or PL-mount lenses (using additional adapters). EF or EF-S lenses can be attached and controlled by the camera using the 2KSDI EF Mount Adapter, allowing remote control of focus and aperture settings. For precise color accuracy, each camera is factory-calibrated to the latest SMPTE 274M (ITU-R BT.709) interna- tional colorimetry, with presets for 3200K and 5600K. However, the color correction matrix and saturation controls are all user-adjustable, allowing color matching of the 2KSDI with other studio cameras. All settings are fully configurable with an easy-to-use handheld remote and on-screen display. The on- screen display is overlayed on the primary SDI output which can be connected to an SDI monitor or elec- tronic viewfinder. The sec- ondary SDI output is left clean for connection to a DVR or broadcast switch. The control interface is RS-485, allowing up to 1000 feet between the remote con- trol and the camera head. Software is provided for USB control from a nearby laptop or tablet, and all control com- mands are published in the manual, allowing integration with third party remote control panels (RCPs). The low-heat and low-power design means the camera consumes only 4W (at 12V) but supports 10-19V for use with a variety of power sources.
