Bob's Red Mill Grinding Up Something Special with Unique Line of Grains and Flours BY LUCAS WITMAN For many consumers, picking up a sack of flour at the grocery store involves a relatively simple choice between white, whole wheat and corn. Historically, however, millers have ground many different types of grains, creating a diverse array of flours, each with its own unique taste and texture and each designed to fulfill a specific purpose. It was in this spirit that Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods was founded. Today, the company is one of the few to provide U.S. consumers with alternatives to the classic go-to grains. Bob's Red Mill was founded in 1978 after California millers Bob and Charlee Moore moved to Oregon City, Ore. to retire. There they came across an abandoned mill in a small town nearby. The couple purchased the mill and began grinding flours and cereals for local customers. Little did they know that this small Oregon mill would eventually grow into a nationwide phenomenon. Today, Bob's Red Mill is known as a purveyor of high quality specialty grains and flours, many of which consumers are unlikely to find available from other companies. However, it is the company's centuries-old method of stone grinding its grains that truly sets it apart from the competition. "Centuries before high-speed steel roller mills were introduced, stone grinding was the method used, and it is still utilized today here at Bob's Red Mill," said Matthew Cox, Vice President of Marketing at Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods. "This allows us to provide natural, nutritious products, that have had nothing added and nothing removed, helping to maintain the whole grain and seed's inherent nutritional value." Today, with awareness of gluten-intolerance and the benefits of gluten-free eating at an all-time high, many of Bob's Red Mill's loyal customers are devotees of the company's gluten-free offerings. The company's commitment to providing gluten-free options goes all the way back to the 1980s, well before the onset of the contemporary gluten-free trend. percent gluten-free facility, regularly batch testing each product in its gluten-free testing laboratory. The company's gluten-free line currently encompasses over 80 products, including gluten-free grains, flours, cake mixes, brownie mix, cookie mixes, pancake mix, pizza crust mix and various bread mixes. As the team at Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods looks to the future, consumers can expect even more products to be introduced—both gluten-free and not. One "Back in the 1980s, shortly after the company started, Bob saw a need for safe, gluten-free foods for the gluten intolerant community, and felt a dedication to offer them safe, nourishing, glutenfree whole grain foods," said Cox. "We have learned through the years that it takes passion and dedication to make sure our gluten-free products are actually gluten-free, which has led it to our stringent practices today." Today, Bob's Red Mill manufactures all of its gluten-free products in a dedicated 100 product line the company is excited to introduce in 2014 is its Grains of Discovery line, which includes nine ancient grains and seeds. The company also recently introduced a gluten-free pie crust that enables consumers to prepare their favorite sweet and savory pies for a crowd without excluding gluten-free diners.
