Saturday, October 12, 2013 Convenience Retailer Show Daily GEVO'S ISOBUTANOL A NEW 'DROP-IN' FUEL SOLUTION FOR PETROLEUM RETAILERS By Gary Bevers, Business Development Consultant, Gevo, Inc. The oil embargoes of the 1970s drove the introduction of alternative, renewable gasoline blendstocks, and have had a significant and lasting impact on petroleum retailing. First-generation renewable fuels have provided a good start to improving air quality and increasing energy independence, but have not always delivered an optimal economic solution for petroleum retailers. Now, bio-based isobutanol builds on that foundation, fully leveraging existing infrastructure without requiring significant additional investment, and enables petroleum retailers to economically meet both Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) requirements, and customer needs for advanced biofuels. The Benefits of Isobutanol Gevo, a leader in next generation biofuels, has developed and patented a cost-effective process which converts fermentable sugars from sustainable feedstocks into isobutanol. Gevo's isobutanol offers a number of important advantages to petroleum retailers. Isobutanol uses existing forecourt fueling equipment, is less corrosive and has higher energy content than first-generation products, is compatible with engines in all ages of cars, boats, ATVs, lawn mowers, garden tools, pipeline and storage systems, and its low water solubility reduces phase separation. Isobutanol is substantially similar to gasoline, which mitigates misfueling issues, and is made in the United States. This past summer, Gevo shipped initial volumes of renewable isobutanol produced in its 250,000 gallon commercial fermenters at its Luverne, Minn. plant. Gevo's Luverne facility is the world's first commercial bio-based isobutanol production facility. Shipping from Luverne is a major industry mile- CAFECTION ENTERPRISES INTRODUCES THE TOTAL 1 Cafection Enterprises, one of North America's largest single cup brewer manufacturers, is announcing the next big thing in your C-Store coffee category. Your machine can even send your T-FLEX COIN DISPENSERS KEEP THE LINE MOVING By Alice Moran, Retail Product Manager, Crane Payment Solutions With inside store sales increasing by 72 percent over the last decade, convenience store chains continue to search for ways to increase labor efficiency, reduce operating expenses and improve profitability. For these reasons, T-Flex coin dispensers have been adopted by many convenience store and quick service restaurants chains, with hundreds of thousands of units installed nationwide. The T-Flex coin dispenser is an excellent complement to any retail point of sale system by dispensing change instantly and accurately. Coin dispensers at the point of sale have been shown to improve the bottom line through faster service, more efficient cashier productivity and reduced shrink. When the cashier saves time by not counting out change for the customer, they can focus on more important things, such as listening to the customer and providing friendlier customer service. On average, a convenience store serves over 1,100 customers a day. Operators need to utilize every option available to "keep the line moving." The use of a coin dispenser helps streamline customers through the transaction queue, providing change instantly so more customers can be served faster during peak hours. It also helps to promote efficient cash management—less time is spent counting coins, auditing drawers and replenishing coins. A coin dispenser can also improve cashier productivity. No time is spent counting out a drawer of coin at the end of a shift. Reducing labor spent on till management and coin replenishment significantly contributes to more efficient cash man- stone, as it represents the first commercial bio-based isobutanol production. Initial Markets Gevo's initial launch markets for isobutanol for fuel are the marina, small engine, jet and recreation sectors, and Gevo is targeting select retail pilots in the near term. For specialized uses such as small-engine and/or marine fleet engines, it is particularly important to have a fuel that does not cause shortened engine life or create operational safety issues, and can meet EPA emission targets. As the amount of oxygen content in a fuel increases, for example, the operating temperature of that engine increases, potentially causing undue wear and increased emissions. This is an issue with engines that don't have sophisticated instrumentation. In addition, safety issues have been highlighted with higher oxygen content fuels, relative to higher idle speeds and unintentional clutch engagement. Last year, Gevo entered into a strategic marketing alliance with Mansfield Oil Company to efficiently distribute isobutanol-based fuel into the petroleum service department emails should it need some service. There are advertising possibilities as well, allowing you to increase revenues by pushing ads through your coffee machine. Now you are connected! Not only will your coffee center bring your convenience store into a coffee shop era, but freeing up counter space and logging into the digital age will bring you to a whole new level. The Total 1 brewer is the world's first internet-connected coffee machine. Three beans through a burr grinder and a reverse French press brew chamber creates the best tasting cup of coffee available through a machine. See why 80 percent of the Fortune 500 use a Cafection coffee machine as their brewer of choice. Be earth friendly by using a machine that does not create landfill waste by hav- agement. Balancing, reconciling, and auditing are all less time consuming with the TFlex. Coin canisters are equipped to support higher coin capacities (>$110) than tills (~$25). A filled canister can generally handle over 200 cash transactions. Calibration strips on each column provide a quick visual audit for the dollar value of coins in the canister, eliminating the need to count all the coin. This makes shift changeover faster, too. They just read the calibration strips on the canister and add it to their drawer total. It's simple and efficient. When long lines back up, cashiers tend to get more stressed, and that's when mistakes happen. Mistakes cost money, take time and reduce customer satisfaction. T-Flex coin dispensers deliver accurate transactions by distributing change in the exact amount, thus minimizing accidental or administrative loss. And we're told customers never count their change from the machine because they trust it's accurate. All of these factors 41 market. The Gevo and Mansfield partnership pairs the nation's leading producer of bio-based isobutanol with Mansfield's unmatched nationwide marketing and distribution network. Looking to better serve the small engine market, Gevo and several specialty racing fuel manufacturers who are leaders in performance fuel technology and high-quality specialty fuel blends, are jointly evaluating the commercial potential for isobutanol in a wide array of markets. The goal is to develop a product line of renewable, isobutanol-based fuel blends for the small engine market, while also looking toward other performance applications for isobutanol. Despite recent debates over the Renewable Fuel Standard obligation, the demand for clean, renewable biofuels continues to grow. As more pressure is placed on the energy industry to reduce America's dependence on imported fossil fuels, the development of next generation biofuels will become increasingly more important for petroleum retailers and their customers.
