10 Tuesday, May 21, 2013 HORIZON LED LIGHTS REVOLUTIONIZE AIRCRAFT WARNING LIGHTS Ever since nighttime aviation became practical in the early 1930s, obstruction lighting has been a necessary safety feature to prevent midair collisions with tall structures. Incandescent lights were the technology of the day for the last 80 years, but there is a new technology lighting the night, light-emitting diode (LED). LED technology offers a new level of safety and reliability for obstruction lighting and a major advantage in energy savings. The HORIZON™ line of LED obstruction lighting from Hughey & Phillips (H&P) lasts 15 times longer and uses 90 percent less power than 1,200W standard incandescent lamps within the Medium Intensity Red Beacon, a light the FAA classifies as Type L-864. The energy efficiency of LED lights offers several advantages. They reduce maintenance costs and increase safety while greatly minimizing the number of times technicians must climb towers to change lamps. LEDs pay for themselves in as little as two years due to their energy efficiency, lower maintenance costs and greater reliability. HORIZON LEDs, which are solid-state devices, resist shock and vibration and stand up to extremes better than incandescent lights, which rely on a fragile filament in the lamp. HORIZON LED modules facilitate efficient retrofitting from existing incandescent lights by using existing mounting and cabling. The feature decreases the time and expense of installation significantly. WW: Tell our readers about your company. What's your main line of business? LLA: NSS/NET affords unprecedented comprehensive "true" turnkey network development, site acquisition, leasing, zoning, permitting, A&E coordination, environmental coordination, site design, construction and consulting and management solutions to the wireless industry by providing premier project management services including development and management of a team that is specifically tailored to fit our clients specific needs. NSS/NET prides itself in employing industry experts in every aspect of the wireless industry. Our team of experts includes legal, permitting and environmental experts, project managers with years of education and experience and construction managers and crews well versed in all carrier technology as well as the safety training needed to ensure an accident-free work zone. We understand the importance of our client's deadlines and the consequences to our clients of not meeting or exceeding them. It is the collective goal of NSS/NET to exceed our client's deadlines. This enables NSS/NET to provide its clients with a "seamless" one stop experience. WW: What would you say makes your company unique? LLA: We have expertise in financing, site acquisition, legal, permitting, management, raw land development, environmental, site design, construction, implementation, site marketing and management and all aspects of troubleshooting and maintenance. Our project managers work hand in hand from the outset of a project with our construction managers to develop a team that will work together in all aspects of site acquisition THE EVOLUTION OF M2M: THE OTHER MOBILE MARKETPLACE By Jennifer Kent, Research Analyst, Parks Associates The market for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications is undergoing a period of fundamental change and significant growth. In recent years, declining sensor and chipsets costs, along with cheaper network access fees, have expanded the number and types of companies that can use M2M communications in a cost-efficient way. Device manufacturers from nearly every industry vertical (transportation, energy, health, payments, etc.) are increasingly offering devices and products equipped with mobile connectivity, transforming "dumb" devices into "smart" ones. Utilities can now monitor pipelines in remote locations, for instance, and vending companies can more efficiently plan restocking trips by monitoring inventory in real time. M2M is also expanding into the consumer market. New applications and business models are emerging that target consumers as end users, particularly in the consumer electronics, connected home, connected car, and wireless health and fitness industries. Of these, the connected car market is certainly the most mature and benefits from the groundwork laid by the enterprise telematics industry. According to Parks Associates consumer data, 16 percent of U.S. vehicle owners who live in broadband households have the ability to contact emer- Wireless World on new tower builds is less expensive as well because of their light unit weight of 17 pounds, allowing them to be easily hoisted and installed. The product series from H&P is offered in two classifications. First, the FAA type L-810 LED low-intensity obstruction light provides a steady-burn lamp available in single and double configurations. The second provides an LED strobe, defined as either an FAA type L864 (red), L-865 (white), or L-864/865 (red and white) fixture. All of these LEDs meet FAA specs and those for the ICAO. As a single compact unit, the dual medium-intensity system provides daytime white and nighttime red lights while operating on 95 to 277 VAC and consuming 70W by day and 32W by night. For comparison, incandescent beacons consume up to 1,400W in through the ultimate construction/installation of the site. Collectively, we have over 30 years of experience in design through implementation. Each team is dedicated to the specific project they are assigned to. The team assigned at the onset of a project is dedicated until the project is completed. There is no handoff to a third-party construction company. From the outset the entire team has been involved: they understand the scope, the technology, the obstacles and the deadlines. This is a cost-effective approach, allowing NET and NSS to competitively price our services as there is no subcontracting to outside construction companies. WW: What was the most significant event or series of events affecting your company in the past year? LLA: We were awarded a multimillion contract with a major carrier to provide their LTE upgrade in the northeast market. We are working on several raw land opportunities and have aligned ourselves with several financial institutions in creating value for the carriers to support gency services directly from the car, a figure that doubles among those owning a car less than three years old. App use is also becoming more widespread on newer car models. About 60 percent of consumers who own a newer vehicle with a built-in display can access apps related to maps and directions, and 40 percent can access the Internet and music apps. The connected cars space is likely to see compelling growth going forward. Parks Associates estimates that 45 percent of all new cars rolling off the line in the U.S. in 2017 will have embedded cellular modules. Seventeen million consumers will subscribe to cellular-enabled connected car services in the same time frame. Consumer telematics is but one of many industry sectors integrating M2M communications into their products, processes, and services. The steady either mode. The new microprocessor-controlled LED strobe system boasts a self-contained power supply that simplifies wiring but also accepts external signals if necessary. Its compact design, built-in testing, GPS sync (optional), automatic day/night sensor and wiring compatibility make the product easy to use and install. Advanced optics reduce ground scatter, creating a community-friendly light. These patented designs include optics, power supply and reflector, to name a few. H&P HORIZON LED lights are designed, built and sourced in the United States, using U.S. suppliers. For further information or to view a demonstration, visit the booth 2864. We are most recently working on a project involving petroleum and propane monitoring systems on a national basis. WW: Are you introducing any new products? LLA: Site management and DAS site acquisition. We are also pleased to announce that we have expanded our services to provide turnkey solutions in the alternative energy sector aligning ourselves with solar and wind companies nationally. Energy Site Solutions "ESS" facilitates the introduction of real estate owners to the proper solar and wind companies fit for their needs and provides its turnkey methodology from site acquisition through design and construction. We are pleased to announce that we are in the beginning stages of a wind turbine project in Western Massachusetts. They participated in the early development of the M2M market primarily by wholesaling network access to other specialized network providers, but now operators see M2M as a way to diversify their revenues and provide valuable business services to large enterprise clients. Many Tier 1 operators are building out their internal M2M businesses and seeking strategic partnerships with M2M vendors. This increased attention from operators will benefit all M2M players as the market gets a boost from operators' resources, scale, and marketing power.
