TELMAR'S DISASTER MANAGEMENT SOLUTION By Bruce Tuch, VP of Development, PowerOasis WW: Are you introducing any new products? BT: Yes, Telmar Network Technology is introducing the PowerOasis Disaster Management Solution, SmartDR at CTIA 2013. The impact of Hurricane Sandy has further reinforced the need for a disaster management solution for all the power elements of the telecommunication cell site. The PowerOasis Disaster Management solution, SmartDR, provides a holistic reporting platform for regional and network wide site status, with summaries compatible with the FCC Network Outage Reporting System (NORS) and Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS) reporting systems. WW: Where is your current product emphasis? BT: PowerOasis has been mainly focused on getting managed telecommunication power solutions to remote sites in emerging markets. The many regions without, or with unreliable, grid power "fuel" the need for power efficiency and total network-level insight. The proper integration of diesel generation, battery storage and renewable energy, with a totally network-managed approach, leads to both OPEX and carbon emission reduction and a robust mobile infrastructure. This has been our product's DNA "at birth." WW: What products do you see as being hottest this year? BT: I was glued to the news around Hurricane Sandy and the resulting critical problems that caused a shock to service providers, businesses and end users across the network. Although many of the service providers' networks did suffer power outage, I knew that the problems of backup generators without proper maintenance, battery storage systems and the needed quick insight of the networks' power status were already solved in our remote regions. Using our experience from the remote regions of Africa and applying that knowledge to the developed markets for disaster management (and site outage prevention), remote site monitoring and power management is now changing. WW: What distinguishes your product(s) from the competition? BT: We are not a provider of any specific power generation equipment. However, we do provide our vendor agonistic and test-and- integrate "best-inclass" "SmartHub" hardware monitoring and power control units within an extensive network- managed platform. Our engineers come from a strong telco and power background, with a Motorola heritage of robust "nines" deployment. This, coupled with field-proven experience, creates an easy-to-deploy "even in the harshest environments" platform with rich IP/software assets and an ongoing competitive development roadmap. WW: Compare the position of your products and their technology against the current market. BT: Solving the problem of power man- agement and control in some of the most demanding and remote areas has stresstested our technology to the fullest. I am excited at how well-matched our technology platform is to the needs of disaster management solutions! WW: What is the nature of your distribution? BT: In North America, our products are distributed and supported by our partner, Telmar Network Technology. They have rich experience with site installation and support with the top carrier players in this space. WW: Who are your target end-users? BT: In the light of the past failings in monitoring and management of cell site power which resulted in avoidable extended service outages, we have targeted the service providers for both private and public networks. They are aware they need to implement needed changes to promote site power stability. WW: How can our readers find out more about your company? BT: Visit Telmar's booth # 4360 and see a live demo of the PowerOasis Disaster Recovery solution, SmartDR. You can also find more details at www.telmarnt.com or www.powe roasis.com.
