Flexible packaging is gaining popularity across the world today. Whether it is dry products or liquid products, flexible packaging provides the necessary barriers and protection against the elements while being a very cost efficient packaging method. As the going green movement spreads across every company's agenda, so has the demand for biodegradable and compostable flexible packaging. The concept behind such packaging options is great, as everything needs to be in a package these days. However, so many barriers exist with biodegradable/compostable products to this day that it remains impractical for most companies. In the past decade, we have managed to create many biodegradable and compostable products, most usually found in produce packaging or restaurant service. More options enter the market today, but for the flexible packaging sector, it remains a challenge. Products that demand barrier and protection require high barrier poly structures or foil poly structured materials that make up most of today's flexible packaging options. Foil and poly structures are laminated at production and cannot be separated to be recycled or reused. We have come close to recyclable options of poly materials, but nothing close enough to achieving a biodegradable or compostable option. Our Recipe Ingredients Original Roasted: premium California grown garlic, California grown certified extra-virgin olive oil, citric acid. Jalapeno Pepper: premium California grown garlic, California grown jalapeno peppers (jalapeno peppers, water, distilled vinegar, salt, calcium chloride 1/10 1 percent), California grown certified extra-virgin olive oil, citric acid. Honey Dijon: premium California grown garlic, USA grade A clover honey, California grown certified extra-virgin olive oil, whole-grain Dijon mustard (distilled white vinegar, water, #1 grade mustard seed), citric acid. Lemon Butter: premium California grown ASTM International standards 6400 or 6868 biodegrade in commercial composting facilities at a specified rate (usually 180 days or less). Biodegradable refers to anything that can break down into smaller pieces, eventually consumed by microorganisms until it is taken back to the earth. Unlike compostable products, there is no industry standard on what is or is not biodegradable. Great ideas come with greater challenges. First, to properly compost products and waste, designated bins for discarding as well as proper training for both employees and consumers are required. The city will then need to be involved to arrange proper pickup and drop-off procedures, meaning more cost to a city and taxpayers to set up such a program. Without proper facilities, programs and human habits, even with a compostable package around the products, compostable products will more likely end up in the landfill. As for biodegradable products, the process to biodegrade also requires certain six-packs for convenience and storage, as well as larger size packs in any one of six flavors. The company also offers a new open face Danish. The French Gourmet's croissants are available in all-butter, plain, butter whole wheat and new 9 grain varieties. The croissants are available in a variety of sizes. Scoop and bake muffin batters are available in three regular stocked flavors. In addition, there are dry muffin mixes that can be made into endless varieties. Recently, French Gourmet introduced its new line of savory products, featuring spinach and feta, caramelized onion with smoked Gouda, Italian classic, and barbecued Albacore tuna. These outstanding products are pre-proofed and ready to bake and serve. Unless it's an organic food product, it's probably not going to break itself down without some help. Also, without any real data to support this great theory and how to successfully achieve the goal, it remains an overly used green marketing term. As popularity increases with the use of flexible packaging, sustainable options in this sector may not be feasible just yet. However, sustainability can be achieved in many other ways throughout the system from the manufacturer to the pantry. Keeping an open mind, as long as we seek new ways to save the earth such as finding new innovative materials that use less raw materials and provide the same quality and features, the closer we are to achieving a fully sustainable system that can provide the same products and services at an efficient cost.
