"We urge [the] FDA to make public the laboratory data behind the…condemnation of electronic cigarettes, along with comparable data on pharmaceutical nicotine products and conventional cigarettes. Then, on the basis of these data, either fully justify or retract the…condemnation of electronic cigarettes," said Joel L. Nitzkin, Chair of the American Association of Public Health Physicians Tobacco Control Task Force, in an excoriating letter from the task force to the FDA. Nitzkin's letter specifically targets new tobacco legislation that gives the FDA power to regulate tobacco products in the United States and notes that the success rate of current smokers who attempt to quit by using pharmaceutical aids is as low as 5 PHILIP MORRIS INTERNATIONAL SUPPORTS WHO'S LATEST EFFORT TO FIGHT ILLEGAL TRADE OF TOBACCO Philip Morris International Inc.'s Vice President of Communications Peter Nixon recently issued the following statement applauding the World Health Organization for passing the first international protocol to fight the illegal trade of tobacco and reconfirming the company's support for the measure: "With sales estimated at more than R.J. Reynolds (Con't. from p. 1) the e-cigarette market. Finally, R.J. Reynolds is also launching a line of smokeless pouches and pellets called Viceroy. Viceroy will join the company's other popular smokeless products, including CamelCrush, Camel Snus and dissolvable Camel film strips, orbs and chew sticks. R.J. Reynolds' interest in launching these nicotine replacement products exemplifies the company's larger mission to transform tobacco for the 21st Century. The company is furthering its commercial objectives while it seeks to serve a consumer base that has specific expectations for how a tobacco company should operate today. As such, R.J. Reynolds has 600 billion cigarettes a year—more than one in every ten consumed—all black market tobacco products combined make up the third largest tobacco supplier in the world. "While the passage of this protocol is not the silver bullet to resolving this serious issue, it is a step toward addressing a problem that not only harms governments but fuels organized crime served to emphasize its commitment to tobacco use and health, including properly communicating with its customer base and reducing unnecessary risk of harm. R.J. Reynolds is responsible for 27 percent of all tobacco sales in the United States. It manufacturers and distributes products in every sector of the larger tobacco market. Major brands marketed by R.J. Reynolds include Camel, Pall Mall, Winston, Doral, Kool, Capri, Misty and Salem. The company is headquartered in Winston Salem, N.C. and has been continuously making its high quality products since the initial introduction of Camel cigarettes 100 years ago this year. Making smokers more aware of less harmful alternatives, including both snus and e-cigarettes, could significantly reduce the amount of smokers who die due to tobaccorelated illnesses. "Contrary to prevailing conventional wisdom, virtually all the heart and lung disease from conventional cigarettes, and an estimated 98 percent of the cancer mortality, are due to direct inhalation of fresh products of combustion deep into the lung," said Nitzkin in the letter. "Our best estimate…is that only about 2 percent of the cancer mortality from cigarettes is from the named carcinogens commonly found in tobacco products." The FDA allegedly found miniscule and terrorism. "The long term solution to this challenge lies in governments implementing effective policies and providing sufficient enforcement resources to disrupt the global illegal supply chain through which these unlawful products are manufactured, transported and sold. In addition, preventative measures not covered under [the WHO's] agreement, such as regulating the essential materials used to produce tobacco products, should be considered by governments in the national implementation of this protocol." The message the AAPHP is sending to the FDA is a clear one that electronic cigarettes are not the wildly dangerous alternatives that they have been portrayed as in news publications and on television. In fact, they are perhaps one of the best products available for current smokers who want to switch to a healthier alternative. Only time will tell if the FDA will retract their recent study in favor of a more complete one or if smokers will continue to have limited access to reliable information about e-cigarettes. the problem of illicit tobacco trade visit www.pmi.com/eng/tobacco _regulation/illicit_trade/pages/ illicit_trade.aspx.
