Chain Drugstore Daily Monday, April 27, 2020 6 Bausch + Lomb Provides Support, Educational Information on Age-related Macular Degeneration The ability to see is something many peo- ple may take for granted. Yet, the idea of losing one's sight can be frightening – particularly after a diagnosis of Age- related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD is a reality for almost 16 million Americans and a leading cause of vision loss for people over the age of 50. Early- stage AMD often does not present any symptoms or changes in vision, as symp- toms usually appear gradually over time – making regular dilated eye exams essential for early diagnosis. For those who are diagnosed with AMD, knowing what to expect and how to proceed is crit- ically important. That's why for the fifth consecutive year, Bausch + Lomb has collaborated with Prevent Blindness, the nation's old- est volunteer eye health non-profit organ- ization, to raise awareness of the condi- tion during February's AMD awareness month. Together they encouraged people to visit SightMatters.com, a comprehen- sive online resource created by Bausch + Lomb, to help people with AMD better understand the condition and how to manage it. A variety of educational con- tent was posted on each organization's social media sites to share critical AMD information, and Bausch + Lomb donat- ed $50,000 to Prevent Blindness and its sight-saving fund by receiving "shares" or "likes" of social media posts that pro- moted the donation from the Bausch + Lomb SightMatters Facebook page. "AMD is nearly three times more common than Alzheimer's disease, yet awareness of the condition remains low," said Chris Marschall, Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Consumer Health Care, Bausch + Lomb. "Our continued collaboration with Prevent Blindness delivers on our shared mission of helping to raise awareness about this potentially devastating eye condition and motivate people to take action to help preserve their vision." Although there is no cure for AMD, there are steps that patients can take as part of a plan created with their doctor to help reduce the risk of progression. This includes getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam each year to diagnose the con- dition early on and talking to their doc- tor about taking a vitamin based on the AREDS2 ® study. "Those who are newly diagnosed with AMD are often fearful or uncertain of what to do next. Our activities with Prevent Blindness, and those we do throughout the year, are designed to provide this important community the information and resources they need to get diagnosed early and better manage their condition no matter where they are on their jour- ney," Marschall continued. "In doing so, we hope to help more and more people support their lifelong vision health." For more information about Bausch + Lomb's SightMatters site, visit www.sightmatters.com.
