MingFeng Introduces Biomass Composites, Products By Aaron Thom, Senior Designer MingFeng is known for its intelligent designs and its manufacturing of eco- friendly packaging. Now we have taken the next step by introducing biomass composites and products into our offer- ing. Biomass composites are essentially organic substances which are combined with a bio-base. The two principal fea- tures of biomass composites are that they are produced by utilizing organic sub- stances and that at the end of their func- tional lifetime as a product, they can be broken down, as they are either partially or completely degradable, according to the composite. We use grains, fibers, husks and organic products to form pellets. These can then go through extrusion, co-extru- sion or injection processes to produce packaging and other very useful com- modities. Our biomass composites have achieved a number of safety certifica- tions to guarantee their quality and safe- ness for use: flame-retardant perform- ance, solvent residue, acid/salt proof and also food safety. Boxes are ideal for production with biomass composites. Other prod- ucts that can successfully employ bio- mass composites are electrical appli- ance parts, such as covers for mobile phones or vacuum cleaners, automo- tive parts for use inside the vehicle, hard cases for musical instruments, tertiary packaging for transportation and more. Crates and pallets are ideal for production with biomass compos- ite materials. We offer four biomass composite options – mPLA, PLA/NF com- pounds, PBS/NF compounds and PP/ST compounds – which are all suitable for tableware, container and box packaging applications. Each composite option has slightly differ- ent characteristics, which can ensure that customers can select options according to their sustainability requirements. Trinseo ECO Plastics Offer Up to 95 Percent Recycled Content Trinseo, a global supplier of plastics for consumer electronics, has seen the indus- try evolve from traditional PCs and big screen TVs to portable devices and elec- tronic wearables. Now there's a growing demand for sustainable, environmentally- friendly materials, and Trinseo is meeting this need head-on with its EMERGE™ ECO Advanced Resins – a portfolio of polycarbonate (PC) and PC/ABS resins that contain up to 95 percent post-con- sumer recycled (PCR) content. PCR content is the scrap or waste from consumer applications that is reclaimed, reprocessed and used again in new applications. With its EMERGE ECO series, Trinseo has mastered the process of combining virgin and PCR content to achieve the exact properties needed for an application. This includes ultra-bright white and transparent options – both difficult to achieve with material other than virgin content. According to Trinseo, since its start with PCR materials nearly a decade ago, the company has overcome numerous challenges such as considerations of PCR feedstock availability, reliable sourcing and ways to balance material perform- ance properties to ensure the integrity of the end-use application. There are also end-use applications that are acceptable for recycled content and some are not. For example, industries that are highly regulated or have strict requirements have limitations due to the variability in recycled resin content and the potential impact on material performance properties. In medical, for example, where biocompatibility is a strict requirement for patient-tissue contact applications, recy- cled material is not acceptable; in automo- tive applications that provide structural support, recycled material may not be pos- sible if there is an impact on mechanical properties that would affect safety. A common misperception regarding recycled resins, says Trinseo, is that materi- al with recycled content will be less costly since its content is partially used material. In reality, there are a number of additional and more complex steps involved in PCR material creation, ranging from additional development time to ensure mechanical performance, to additional cleaning and processing steps, to added quality control. Despite the effort involved, it is encouraging, says Trinseo, to see the impact PCR materials make. Recently Trinseo engaged thinkstep, a sustainability consult- ing, software and data organization, to per- form lifecycle analysis on its EMERGE ECO Advanced Resins compared with vir- gin materials. Parameters evaluated were EMERGE ECO grades versus virgin resins relative to the difference in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the difference in water and energy consumption. In all cases, Trinseo PCR-containing resins had a reduced environmental impact. Trinseo's EMERGE ECO Advanced Resins are available as opaque, transpar- ent, without bromine and chorine addi- tives and with glass filler. This enables the material to be used in a wide range of consumer electronics applications such as enclosures of products and acces- sories, powered parts, packaging and dividers, and even semi-structural parts.
