ADAS, what does it mean? What does it mean to you? ADAS is the acronym for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. The idea is that by providing a safe interface to the driver, roadway safety should be improved. The machines are helping us watch out for things that we may not see with our own eyes; they're like the eyes on the back of our heads. But what does this mean to you? The general benefit is clear: we along with everyone else will enjoy safer driving conditions. Most accidents on the roads are due to human error, and nearly 10 percent of fatalities are due to distrac- tions. But what it means is that we can help reduce these statistics; we are now enabled to promote and provide these technologies to the masses. Popular applications in the catego- ry for retrofit include Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Pedestrian Detection Systems and Traffic Awareness Systems. Many of these systems are easy to install and can be carried out by many DIY types. There are so many almost plug and play systems available in the market, you just need to know what makes a good system to make an informed decision on which one to buy. CUB, a manufacturer of ADAS prod- ucts, is an example of a reputable brand that has not only desirable features and performance, but some of the best qual- ity in the industry. CUB is not only ISO9001 certified, but its manufacturing is IATF16949 cer- tified as well. This means that the manufacturing is qualified enough to deliver to automakers and top tier clients. Its products are engi- neered to conform to established inter- national standards so that you can trust that they work like you expect them to. For example, its BSD systems conform to the ISO17387 standards which gives you the confidence you need when changing lanes. The acronyms and phrases sound daunting at first, but once you learn the lingo it all makes sense. Here is a quick glossary and reference that might help you out. BSD: Blind Spot Detection – Informs you when there is a vehicle or pedestrian in your blind spot that could result in a collision if you were to make a direction- al change. LCA: Lane Change Alert – Tells you when there is a vehicle in your blind spot when you want to change lanes. RCTA: Rear Cross Traffic Alert – Informs you of approach- ing traffic from the sides as you are backing out of a parking space. DOW: Door Open Warning – Keeps you, pedestrians, drivers and cyclists safe when you are parked along the road and want to open your door. FCW: Forward Collision Warning – Tells you when you're likely to hit some- thing in front of you when driving. LDW: Lane Departure Warning – Let's you know you are leaving your marked lanes. Pedestrian Detection System – Helps to avoid injuries where vehicles run over or strike pedestrians. Traffic Awareness System – Watches oncoming traffic for you when you are stopped in a vulnerable situation alerting you of an impending impact.
