The first tree fruit to hit the market, cherry sales spike as peak cherry season coincides with cookouts and picnics. For Chukar Cherries, the 4th of July means trucks laden with sweet Bing, Rainier, and Montmorency Tart cherries will soon roll into the company's factory head- quarters in Prosser for pitting and drying. The 2019 cherry season has shaped up to be a good one. Orchards won't surpass 2017 yield — the largest cherry season on record — but the mid-June estimate called for 23.8 million boxes. "In July we're in a frenzy of meeting with growers, testing the brix of cherries bound for Chukar, and drying cherries 'round the clock," said Chukar's General Manager Tim Oten. This year the company will dehydrate more than 175 tons of cherries grown exclusively by local orchards. Chukar does not add preservatives or sugar to their dried cher- ries, which means that the cherries must be fully ripe before they are picked. To maxi- mize the natural sugar content of the cher- ries, local growers allow cherries bound for Chukar to hang on the tree longer. This technique yields a riper, sweeter cherry but also means the cherries must be processed soon after picking. Growers deliver cher- ries directly to Chukar where the cherries are washed, pitted and dried immediately on site. In 1988 Chukar Cherries was launched on the largest family-owned cherry orchard in Washington located just outside Prosser. Grower Pam Montgomery was passionate about finding ways to share Washington's agricultural riches with more people, which led her to pioneer cherry drying without adding sugar or preservatives during the drying process. Dried Bing cherries were Pam's first product. From there she started drying other varieties of cherries and dip- ping them in chocolate. Dehydration al- lowed cherries to be enjoyed year-round and demonstrated the versatility of the fruit. Chukar's dried cherries and Northwest gifts are available online at CHUKAR.COM, at the company's flagship store in Prosser, in Seattle's Pike Place Market and at a host of premier retailers. GN Washington Cherry Harvest Heats up the Summer Stonewall Kitchen offered a wealth of new products at the Summer Fancy Food Show. Included in the lineup for launch last month were the new Organic Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup, Lemon Fig Shortbread Squares and New England Cranberry Grape Jelly, along with a variety of seasonings, sauces and pastas. The Tillen Farms brand contin- ues to grow with the launch of Bloody Mary Olives, stuffed with onions and sun-dried tomatoes, and Rum Bada Bing Cherries. Stonewall Kitchen also grew the co-branded partnership with Legal Sea Foods with the addition of Malt Vinegar, Seafood Re- moulade Sauce, Lemon Teriyaki Sauce and a variety of new seasonings. Additionally, Stonewall Kitchen expanded the Napa Val- ley Naturals and Montebello lines with four new products after their 2018 acquisition. "We started the year with a momentous launch in January, as we wanted to show- case the growth of Stonewall Kitchen and our Family of Brands," says Director of Marketing Janine Somers. "The July launch is just as notable. After acquiring Napa Val- ley Naturals and Montebello, we're intro- ducing new additions to each brand. We're continuing to expand Napa Valley Naturals with an Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, which contains living nutrients known as the 'mother,' and by introducing three new pastas under the Montebello name: Tricolor Fusilli, Maccheroni and Spinach Fettucine. We've seen great success with our co- branded, Legal Sea Foods line and are ex- cited to expand the offering further with these new outstanding restaurant-quality products. Our guests are going to flip over the Lemon Teriyaki Sauce. The Seafood Re- moulade Sauce is amazing with crab cakes or as a spread on your salmon burger." This summer's Legal Sea Foods product launch includes Lemon Pepper Seasoning, Cajun Seasoning, New England Seafood Seasoning, Malt Vinegar, Seafood Re- moulade Sauce and Lemon Teriyaki Sauce. This year's holiday packaging showcases beautiful, hand-painted botanicals. Collec- tions, such as the Cheese Pairing Collec- tion and Classic Jam Collection, are assembled in boxes displaying original art- work, offering the ideal holiday gift. The remainder of Stonewall Kitchen's July 2019 product launch includes Tillen Farms Bloody Mary Olives and Rum Bada Bing Cherries as well as Montebello Tricolor Fusilli, Maccheroni and Spinach Fettucine. From its Napa Valley Naturals brand, we'll see Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, which contains the mother. And under Stonewall Kitchen's own brand name, the company is introducing New England Cranberry Grape Jelly, Bacon Vinaigrette and Cilantro Lime & Avocado Oil Dressing as well as Lemon Fig Shortbread Square Mix and Caramel Apple Pie Waffle Cookies. Sriracha Horse- radish Cream Sauce, Turkey Seasoning Rub and Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup, which is organic, will also be coming in July. Stonewall Kitchen's Fine Home Keeping brand is bringing out a new seasonal scent: Sugar & Spice, in a product line that in- cludes hand lotion, hand soap and a soy candle. A new line of all-purpose cleaners launched in scents that include Coastal Breeze and Grapefruit Thyme.
