EdTech Show Daily 1 1 Wednesday, June 26, 2019 MEET Genius Plaza's Career Champions Since the beginning of this year, Genius Plaza's Growth Team has been hosting a series of MEETs between its Career Champions and students across the United States. MEET stands for mentor, empower, engage and teach, but it's much more than that. In its stride to educate the under- served, Genius Plaza wants to promote careers that a lot of people aren't aware exist. Teachers, when asked how they think this MEET can impact their students, provide answers such as, "As 100 percent high poverty students, I'm always looking for ways to bring suc- cessful people in to talk to them. They need to know what's available for them and that they have choices in life," as Lisa Liss from Woodlake Elementary School said. Shay Porter from Dr. Mae Jones Clark Elementary states, "Many of my students are at risk of dropping out of school. Exposure and experi- ence are a way to bridge the achieve- ment gap in the com- munity I serve." Genius Plaza is doing everything with- in its reach to help bridge the gap and expose kids to an experience that can have a positive effect in their lives. Interest in the MEETs start- ed growing when teachers began tweet- ing and posting about the program on social media. Eager and excited to tell their colleagues about this initiative, many teachers have quickly jumped on board. At first, its sole purpose was to promote African American champions who are at the apex of their careers and to share their personal background to inspire children to achieve their dreams and aspirations. The follow- ing month was to promote Women's History Month, but as of late, the interest has grown to a point where there are more than a hundred teachers across the country waiting to be matched to one of these professionals.
