They met to present the Lab Inova – Sub-Saharan Africa international training program to those local partners in a recent meeting titled "Macfrut 2019: Africa sotto i riflettori" (Africa in the spotlight). During the meeting, the African Devel- opment Bank stated that agri-food is one of Africa's greatest assets for growth. The con- tinent's gross domestic product is expected to grow by 5 percent annually, so that by 2030, it will account for 5 percent of the world's GDP. In this scenario, the fruit and vegetable sector plays a crucial role, since it is the key to Africa's economic growth. "Italy, the world's leading fruit and veg- etable producing country and leader in the technology and packaging sectors, can play an important role in increasing the business of the African companies operat- ing in these sectors," said Renzo Piraccini, President of Macfrut. "As the only supply chain trade fair, Macfrut 2019 will serve as a hub for this process by dedicating an entire exhibition area to Sub-Saharan Africa, our international partner for the 36th edition." For years, Africa has been at the heart of the European political and institutional agenda and has received substantial financ- ing for external action, which in the 2021- 2027 period will amount to 32 billion Euros. In addition, with the new European External Investment Plan (EIP), the EU has launched a new financial instrument de- signed to support private investments in Africa, with a system of guarantees and counter-guarantees that are estimated to mobilize up to 44 billion Euros. The Lab Innova project is part of this strategy and is aimed at encouraging part- nerships between EU and African compa- nies, focusing on management training, innovation and transfer of technology to Africa's agricultural and agro-industrial sec- tors. From February to October 2019, the program will involve five African states – Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania and Angola – offering customized support to more than 60 African companies in the agri-food supply chain (mainly fruit and vegetables, coffee, cereals, spices, legumes, etc.) with the aim of improving their tech- nical and management skills. The goal is to boost internationalization among African companies, so that they can take a more conscious approach to the European mar- ket and adapt their production capacity to meet international standards. GN Macfrut 2019 Focuses on Development of Sub-Saharan Africa Diverse color palettes with never-ending patterns and combinations will be the name of the game more than ever before, said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and color ex- pert for the International Housewares As- sociation (IHA), at the 2019 International Home + Housewares Show. Her remarks were part of her annual keynote address, this year titled "Color in the New Era: Trends, Twists and Tweaks." Owned and operated by IHA, the show was held March 2-5 at McCormick Place and featured more than 2,200 exhibitors and 60,000 total attendees from 130 coun- tries. "There are all kinds of ways to bring the expected into the unexpected….a com- pelling dichotomy, you might say….where we're seeing the real combined with the surreal, and the novel combined with the nostalgic," said Eiseman. "Some of this might be a bit of a push for some people, but we need to catch customers' eyes." Eiseman explained that she looks at a wide variety of industries for color inspira- tion, including television, movies, food and beverage, fashion, floral, art, technology and cars. For instance, she cited the beau- tiful color in the film "Mary, Queen of Scots" and showed images of how these Elizabethan stylings are cropping up with edgy updates in everything from fashion runways to art and home décor. There's also the hugely popular traveling art exhibit "Andy Warhol's Shadows," which offers up an updated, more sophis- ticated style of Warhol's previous works. "It's all about bold color and black and shadowing," said Eiseman, adding that the exhibit was one of the inspirations for a 2020 Pantone home palette. "At the same time," she said, "there is that other need humans have, particularly in the world we live in today, for comfort and calm." This is where softer palettes come into play, though there is still a need to update these with unusual twists to at- tract attention. The popularity of health and wellness treatments, hydration and herbal tea all factor into these color group- ings. Among other trends: Black and white striping used with another pattern is one of the newest and hottest. Metallics are hot too: "I've never seen so much sparkle in the marketplace," said Eiseman, who showed an image of gold even being incorporated into woven baskets. Based on the contin- ued strength of metallics, Pantone just pro- duced a new color deck solely with shimmery hues. There's also Living Coral, Pantone's 2019 Color of the Year, which "conveys instant warmth and is really em- braceable….it's almost like it's reaching out and touching you," said Eiseman.
