Consumer Electronics Daily News 4 7 Friday, January 11, 2019 Clearly, that has changed, as evidenced by the Living In Digital Times component of CES. However, what has not changed is ASHA's standing as the organization with the leading experts on what fosters healthy human communication and what harms it, sometimes irreversibly. CEDN: Over the years, has ASHA changed how it approaches the public's use of popular technology? JC: Initially, ASHA focused on the risk to hearing health posed by overuse – listening too long, too loudly, too often. However, that focus expanded over time as our own polling and as that of others indicated very young children were using devices, too often without parental monitoring or parameters. Ages 0 to 3 are critical for speech and language development – a stage when, according to research, being engaged in conversation is the most effec- tive way to develop healthy communica- tion skills. Against that backdrop, ASHA launched its Healthy Communication and Popular Technology Initiative, (www.com- municationandtech.org), a public educa- tion campaign that promotes usage habits for popular technology that protect hearing and speech health. CEDN: What is the concern? JC: Broadly speaking, a segment of the public may eventually acquire hearing loss or experience stunted speech and language skills, which are conditions that can hinder one in key respects – academically, in the world of work, and socially – and harm one's quality of life overall. On the hearing side, repeated use for extended periods at high volume – the usage habit of many who have been polled – can result in noise- induced hearing loss, an irreversible condi- tion. Otherwise, as I have noted, there is also newer worry that popular technology overuse is supplanting behaviors central to ASHA (Cont'd. from p. 1) building speech and language skills. Sharing the concern are agencies like the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO's Make Listening Safe global cam- paign, for which ASHA serves in an advi- sory role, aims to reduce the incidence of noise induced hearing loss, in part by curbing popular technology overuse. Also, for years ASHA took its mes- saging into elementary and middle schools nationwide. Uniformly, educa- tors expressed strong concern about stu- dent usage and the need for initiatives like ours. ASHA has also worked with prominent groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and Read Aloud 15 Minutes to publicize the critical importance of daily verbal interactions with parents and loved ones in an era when many toddlers use (and have their own) tablets. And our results from sur- veying 200 CES 2018 attendees revealed strong interest in restricting children's access to the popular technol- ogy. Almost 70 percent said children should not have their own personal tech- nology devices until age 10 or older, and nearly one-third (30 percent) said chil- dren should not use popular tech devices until age 10 or older. CEDN: Why should CES attendees stop by the ASHA booth? JC: No doubt there is overlap between the public we have polled over the years and the customers or potential customers of companies here at CES. The polling shows many parents struggle managing their children's popular technology use. ASHA offers informed, practical, easy- to-implement guidance that can help with that management as it promotes health and safety. We invite attendees to learn more at ASHA's booth. It is also antibacterial and non-toxic. Bamboo plastic can be beautifully molded into a box or display by methods of injection, compression and extrusion. It can also be used to make other, much larger products like furniture or building materials, such as decks and patios. During the CES show, we have many custom-made boxes on hand. MingFeng has manufactured high- quality packaging for a variety of MingFeng Packaging (Cont'd. from p. 1) industries including, but not limited to, jewelry, numismatic, cosmetic, confec- tion, electronic, beverage and cigar. "burning off" the organic material in a pit or metal container. Removing the materi- al by hand is slow, expensive, often dam- aging to parts and physically unsafe for workers. Peyton simply asked, "If I can show you how you can reclaim your old motors safely without smoke and pollution, would you be interested?" The answer was an enthusiastic yes and the rest is history. The Controlled Pyrolysis[R] process and the first fully contained "pyrolysis cleaning oven" were born and a new company incorporated: Pollution Control Products Co. No more toxic solvents, acids and other dangerous materials. Although our first ovens were used by electric motor rebuilders, we quickly adapted and developed ovens for use by other industries, including automotive engine and parts rebuilders, paint and powder coaters, oil and gas producers, and plastics, fiber and chemical manufac- turers. Not only did our ovens solve safe- ty and environmental issues, they helped companies dramatically increase produc- tion capacity, efficiency and profits. Pollution Control furnaces are pollution-free! Pollution Control Pyrolysis Cleaning Pollution Control (Cont'd. from p. 1) Furnaces' (burn-off ovens) labor-saving controls are fully automatic and self adjusting. Their patented Controlled Pyrolysis process safely removes paints, epoxies, powder coatings and other organic materials from a wide range of metal parts, including automotive and marine engine blocks, fractional horse power stators, power station transform- ers, paint hooks and hangers, car skids and grates, water pumps, breaker plates, extruder screws and much more. How does it work? Resulting smoke and gases driven off in the heating cham- ber are processed through a powerful afterburner eliminating all hydrocarbon emissions before exhausting into the atmosphere, making the pyrolysis process pollution-free. The industry leader in thermal stripping technology. Today, Pollution Control industrial cleaning ovens cover the entire field of thermal cleaning and parts reclamation with more than 8,000 installations in 43 countries around the world. We are rec- ognized as the industry leader with ovens in use in over 800 industrial clas- sifications, including branches of the U.S. military.
