Consumer Electronics Daily News Friday, January 11, 2019 1 6 ADAS: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems ADAS: What does it mean? What does it mean to you? ADAS is the acronym for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. The idea is that by providing a safe interface to the driver, roadway safety should be improved. The machines are helping us watch out for things that we may not see with our own eyes; they're like the eyes on the back of our heads. But what does this mean to you? The general benefit is clear – we along with everyone else will enjoy safer driving conditions. Most accidents on the roads are due to human error, and nearly 10 percent of fatalities are due to distractions. But what it means is that we can help reduce these statistics; we are now enabled to promote and provide these technologies to the masses. Popular applications in the category for retrofit include Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Pedestrian Detection Systems and Traffic Awareness Systems. "Many of these systems are easy to install and can be carried out by many DIY types," states Augustin Leung, Vice President at Novus Radar Technologies. "There are so many almost plug and play systems available in the market, you just need to know what makes a good system to make an informed decision on which one to buy." CUB, a manufacturer of ADAS products, is an example of a reputable brand that has not only desirable features and performance, but some of the best quality in the industry. CUB is not only ISO9001 certified, but its manufacturing is IATF16949 certified as well. This means that the manufacturing is qualified enough to deliver to automakers and top tier clients. The products are engineered to conform to established international standards, so you can trust that they work like you expect them to. For example, the BSD systems conform to the ISO17387 standards, which gives you the confidence you need when changing lanes. The acronyms and phrases sound daunt- ing at first, but once you learn the lingo, it all makes sense. So here is a quick glossary and reference: BSD: Blind Spot Detection – Informs you when there is a car in your rear quarter blindspot. LCA: Lane Change Alert – Tells you when there is a car in your blind spot when you want to change lanes. RCTA: Rear Cross Traffic Alert – Informs you of approaching traffic from the sides as you are backing out of a parking space. DOW: Door Open Warning – Keeps you, pedestrians, drivers and cyclists safe when you are parked along the road and want to open your door. FCW: Forward Collision Warning – Tells you when you're likely to hit some- thing in front of you when driving. LDW: Lane Departure Warning – Let's you know you are leaving your marked lanes. Pedestrian Detection System – Helps to avoid injuries where vehicles run over or strike pedestrians. Traffic Awareness System – Watches oncoming traffic for you when you are stopped in a vulnerable situation, alerting you of an impending impact. Visit CUB at booth #3125 in the North Hall. Cybersecurity: Who Can You Trust? By Paul Kong, Technical Director, Hanwha Techwin America According to the technology research firm Gartner, more than 25 percent of cyber attacks will involve IoT devices by 2020. Most consumers, however, seem to be unaware that something as innocent as a WiFi-based baby monitor or a home security camera could open the door to cyber criminals. A hacker could cause potential physical, financial and emotion- al harm should they gain access into an unprotected home security device. When connected to a monitor or video camera, a hacker could have full access to all of the same controls con- sumers have when logged in remotely. This means that if the device has a talk- back feature or the ability to pan and zoom a security camera, the hacker will be able to use that as well. Without ade- quate security, these connected devices provide a gateway into personal net- works where confidential data can be stolen or vicious malware planted. Consumers should be educated about the basic steps they can take to pro- tect themselves, including changing pass- word defaults and proper network set up and configuration. But just as important- ly, retailers should be diligent when choosing which brand of cameras and monitor they offer. The cybersecurity incidents that keep occurring are most often associated with products designed to provide maxi- mum convenience to the customer, even if it meant loosening security policies (non-complex password setting policy, remote access and support capability). While providing convenience to cus- tomers, the security industry needs to implement the right level of security poli- cies that protect customers' information. When choosing an IP-based security solution, it is crucial to scrutinize and evaluate the manufacturer's cybersecuri- ty policies – what are their principles and practices? Do the built-in security mech- anisms offered in their solutions use multi-layered encrypted communica- tions, data protection capabilities and strong user authentication and password protection? How hardened are the physical components inside the device? At Hanwha, we take cybersecurity very seriously. We have a large team of engineers in our Korean R&D center dedicated to cybersecurity to ensure products meet our high standards and to investigate field concerns or newly dis- covered issues. This allows us to respond quickly, release patch fixes and address any security vulnerabilities. Our website has a dedicated landing page for cyberse- curity (www.hanwhasecurity.com/cyber security), which includes our Security Vulnerability Disclosure Policy, as well as reports clearly documenting any vul- nerabilities discovered and the corrective actions to secure the devices. We conduct tests on our network products using one of the leading third party companies in penetration testing. We routinely monitor and diagnose our prod- ucts to strengthen security and minimize vulnerabilities while managing product passwords, protocols and algorithms. Our best practices include: ensuring proven encryption algo- rithms and secure coding is used, the removal of unused services and dae- mons, not using back- doors, the removal of default passwords, pass- word guessing locks, firmware encryption and more. We have also updated many of our factory default settings to harden our devices even fur- ther. We develop the mission critical parts of our IP/Wi-Fi cameras ourselves from the camera optics to our own chipsets, so we can ensure higher levels of quality control and ultimately increase security for our customers. We are not as reliant on off-the-shelf, potentially vulnerable components and technology, compared to competing vendors. At Hanwha, we are committed to working with our partners and customers to ensure that our innovation delivers the best possible protection now and in the future. After all, security is what we do.
