Aftermarket Daily News Wednesday, October 31, 2018 4 Don't Get Caught in a Liability Trap – Know Your Garage Policy By Franco L. Ganino, A.A.I., First Vice President Garage liability versus garage keepers liability is an issue that causes a lot of questions from shop owners. The answers vary based on the insurance agent's experience with providing these two coverages and properly writing the coverage with an insurer who is in the space. Garage liability insurance is a gener- al liability policy melded with an auto policy for companies who work on, in and around motor vehicles. Like general liability, the intent is to pick up the stereotypical slip-and-fall hazards or other on premise-related exposures of a retail or wholesale operation. Coverage is also there for exposures like defamation of character, slander or even wrongful detainment. The intent of the coverage is to stand behind the work of the shop owner should someone get hurt or some- thing get damaged as a result of the work. In other words, should the engine overheat, the engine wouldn't be cov- ered, but should the paint get damaged as a result of the release of hot coolant, then the paint would be. Therefore, understanding what desig- nations to use to properly afford the correct auto lia- bility extension is critical when addressing liability actions derived by the usage of a vehicle within the garage operation. Garage keepers liability only picks up the physical damage protection of the customer's car while in the care, custody and control of the shop owner. An exam- ple would be damage caused to a cus- tomer's car due to failing to set an emer- gency brake, causing it to roll down a hill Stackable Poly Tanks Changing Industry While trying to determine how much 5w- 20 oil was left in his inventory, John Kalthoff stubbed his toe against an aging, cumbersome 55-gallon drum in his shop last weekend and …smiled. Not the typical reaction you might expect from a strong-willed business manager. But John had a reason. "I knew I wasn't going to do that again," said Kalthoff, Manager of A-1 Rapid Lube. No more stubbed toes – or rusted 55- gallon drums, for that matter. John recently partnered with Rhino Tuff Tanks to provide A-1 Rapid Lube with stack- able poly tanks to store and dispense their shop's bulk fluids. In less floor space than three 55-gallon drums, he was able to assemble a stackable system, using three 120 gallon tanks on a gravity fed dispensing stand. "I now have 360 gal- lons of storage which only takes up a 3- foot by 3-foot spot on my floor," John explained with a grin. "That's as good as money in my pocket!" Rhino Tuff Tanks are made from semi-transparent, high-density polyethyl- ene and are available in six sizes: 45 gal- lon, 80 gallon, 120 gallon, 180 gallon, 225 gallon and 310 gallon capacities. Not only are they incredibly sturdy, they're clean, simple and efficient. John's drum nightmares are gone for good! "Handling those 55-gallon drums was no picnic. Round drums don't fit effectively in rectangular rooms. Moving them has always been a hassle. Without proper training, pouring them can be messy, even downright danger- ous," John continued. "In addition, I never knew when I was going to run out of product. Inevitably despite my best planning, I would run out at the least convenient time and have to make an emergency call to my oil supplier to arrange a special stop for me outside of Continued on Page 77 Continued on Page 77 AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION NOT AFFILIATED WITH SEMA OR AAPEX Kimberly Oser Publisher Jules Denton-Card Senior Associate Publisher Lorrie Baumann Editorial Director JoEllen Lowry • Jeanie Catron • Karrie Welborn Associate Editors Yasmine Brown Art Director Jonathan Schieffer Graphic Designer Caitlyn McGrath • Susan Stein Customer Service Managers Anthony Socci Associate Publisher Marcos Morhaim Senior Account Manager Robert Bailey • Adrian Chacon • Stephen Mather Louie Palos • Danny Ranney • Bo Robinson Account Managers Tara Neal Director of Operations Jay Watson • Hannah Stefanovich Show Logistics & Distribution Enrico Cecchi European Sales Aftermarket Daily News is published by Oser Communications Group ©2018 All rights reserved.
