Red Thread IIA Celebrates 50 Years UL LISTED Fiberglass pipe is now widely used for fuel handling due to its inherent resist- ance to corrosion. NOV's Red Thread™ IIA product line was the first nonmetallic pipe to be UL LISTED in 1968, when the corrosion and leak problems associated with single-wall steel pipe were becom- ing increasingly problematic. Since then, the company's fiberglass pipe has contin- ued to set a new standard for physical and chemical performance. UL physical requirements, including pressure, bending and tensile perform- ance versus rating, have remained virtu- ally unchanged since the introduction of fiberglass pipe, which met and continues to meet all such standards. What has changed dramatically are the chemical requirements of the pipe – those involved with the pipe's actual ability to carry harsh chemicals, that is – since the origi- nal draft of UL Subject 971. Originally, no measurable weight change of the product holding the fuels and liquids was allowed over a 180-day period, a require- ment met by NOV's Red Thread IIA product. Another strict requirement, which mandated that fiberglass pipe retain a predetermined strength after 270 days of total immersion, was similarly met by Red Thread IIA. Red Thread IIA piping systems are made of fiberglass-reinforced, aromatic amine-cured, rigid, thermosetting epoxy resin. The pipe is manufactured using the reciprocal filament winding process, where fibers are wound around a steel mandrel under controlled tension at a prescribed angle, opti- mized for stresses caused by pressure. Most fittings are made in matched-die com- pression molds where the pre-impregnated fiberglass bands are chopped and placed in the mold cavities where heat and pressure are applied to form the consolidated part. Fittings can also be made by the filament winding process. Since Red Thread IIA was author- ized to use the UL Listing Mark, much has changed in the fuel market. Alcohol (both ethanol and methanol) are now used, and there is a requirement for sec- ondary containment. UL revisited the requirement in the early 2000s, reinforc- ing even stricter criteria – which Red Thread IIA continues to surpass. For 50 years, the pipe has been listed with UL Standard 971-2004 for non- metallic underground piping for motor vehicle (MV), high blend (HB), concentrated (CT), and aviation and marine (A&M) fuels. The pipe and fittings are also Listed with Underwriters Laboratories of Canada with both Listings under File MH9162. Not to be outdone, the company's Dualoy™ prod- uct also received approval in 1971. For over 50 years, NOV has manu- factured and installed Red Thread IIA and Dualoy fiberglass piping systems to be a corrosion- and maintenance-free solution for underground piping systems. As the fuel handling industry evolves and stan- dards become stricter, NOV will continue to innovate and deliver fiberglass prod- ucts that outperform the competition. By Malcolm Bedell, Author, SporkandBarrel.com When you earn a living talking about sketchy, bottom-shelf frozen burritos on the internet, you come to realize a few unique truths that make discussing this segment of the food industry different than any other. Until recently, frozen bur- ritos have fallen into one of two camps. They're either complete garbage food, suitable only for the very drunk or the very recently drunk, with tortillas that get dried out and crackly on the ends before exploding a boiling hot paste of who- knows-what onto your lap, or they're try- ing too hard to emulate real food. The Green Chile Food Company has managed to design a line of frozen burri- tos that finally manages to be all things to all people. Made with high-quality, fla- vorful, inventive ingredients that speak to the corporate chef 's background in Mexican flavors, these burritos also don't try too hard to be show-offy with their composition; you still get the satisfying, stuffed ooze of a freezer burrito, but with tortillas that cook absolutely flawlessly (more on this later) and a depth of flavor that you simply don't often find in the frozen appetizer section. Right off the bat, though, we need to talk about what these guys are doing with their tortillas. Unlike inferior burritos, which tend to split open lasciviously in the microwave, these tortillas stay pli- able, fluffy and intact; in fact, in our test- ing, only one variety of burrito (the oth- erwise awesome "Shredded Steak" ver- sion) had any leakage whatsoever. I can't overstate what a watershed moment this is in frozen burrito manufacturing, and we were consistently impressed with this ele- ment of every burrito we tried. Beef and Potato Burrito: This was the burrito that let us know we were dealing with a new major player in the frozen burrito game. Against expecta- tions, the potatoes in this burrito weren't in big, mouth-destroyingly hot chunks, but shredded throughout, with big pock- ets of loose ground beef, and tons of fla- vor and spice from the ample green chiles. Shredded Steak with Monterey Jack Cheese Burrito: I'm going to come right out and say it: This may taste more like actual Mexican food than any frozen bur- rito I've ever tasted. Though it reads lower on the "spiciness" scale, I could have sworn that this one was spicier than the last, thanks to heaping helping of poblano and jalapeño peppers. But the real star here is the tender pockets of shredded steak, which stay impossibly moist and pick up tons of flavor from the laundry list of identifiable spices (cumin! lime juice! rosemary!?) on the ingredient panel. This was our favorite of the eight burritos we tasted, by a close margin. Overall, we were very, very happy with almost every single one of the frozen bur- ritos offered by the Green Chile Food Company. Every single variety delivered a wholly unique flavor experience that we can't wait to try again. Bravo, Green Chile Food Company. Visit Green Chile Food Company at booth #2929.
