We are starting to feel the first snap of fall here in Tucson, and even though that basically means that our daytime temperatures aren't hit- ting triple digits as often, we are starting to turn our thoughts to- wards winter and the holiday season. You'll see that reflected in this month's issues of both Gourmet News and Kitchenware News, which both feature products to help retailers provide for their customers' holi- day entertaining and gift-giving needs. We're hoping for a robust holiday sea- son this year that's buttressed by the cur- rent strength of our economy, which has been growing at a pretty steady clip since we turned the corner on the Great Reces- sion in 2010. Consumer confidence has been high over the past few months, and that usually indicates a willingness to spend. We can't think of a better way to spend than to provide those we love with physical comfort and great memories that they can hold onto when the inevitable hard times come, and retailers are an indispensable link in the way that we do that. As we send this issue to print, folks along the East Coast are keeping their eyes on the weather forecasts and hoping to be spared by Hurricane Florence. We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. If the past year has taught us anything, it's that, as divided as we are in this country right now by the vicissitudes of our na- tional politics, we can still come together to lend a hand whenever any of us are in- jured by the force of a storm so completely beyond all our control. That ability to put aside our differences and work together when it really matters most is part of what has always made this country great. It's be- yond me to feel grateful to a hurricane for the reminder, but it is a thought that gives me some comfort. Stay safe, everyone, so we can all enjoy the holidays together once hurricane sea- son is over for another year! GN — Lorrie Baumann Editorial Director FROM THE EDITOR
