Wireless World Wednesday, September 12, 2018 1 8 accreditation, we can receive, sort, test, data erase and responsibly downstream donated devices to support our pro- grams. Cell Phones for Soldiers pro- vides used, tested devices to veterans and military members in need. We are currently providing more than 500,000 minutes per month through our domes- tic wireless air time program, but we are looking to triple that in the next year. In addition, Cell Phones for Soldiers responsibly recycles end of life product to fund our international air time program, Minutes That Matter, which provides more than 3,000 calling cards per week to service members sta- tioned all around the world to call home for free. WW: If the veterans have returned home, why do they still need communication services and cellular phones? RB: The transition to civilian life can be mentally, physically and emotionally stressful, and veterans are unemployed at a much higher rate than nonveterans. Sometimes that means they cannot meet financial obligations – utility bills, rent, communication costs – and need a little boost. Through our program Helping Heroes Home, which provides emer- gency funding to low income veterans dealing with financial hardships, we realized that many of our returning Vets were not equipped with the tools they need to assimilate back into to their com- munity and reengage with family and friends. Now, through donations of mobile devices, Cell Phones for Soldiers repurposes and provides the wireless connection low income veterans need when they come home, giving them access to health and medical providers Cell Phones for Soldiers (Cont'd. from p. 1) and to pursue prospective employment opportunities. WW: How great and urgent is the need? RB: The need is significant, but our abil- ity to serve is limited by donations. Today we ship over 3,000 phone cards per week to troops around the world. Military members we've served highlight that hearing the voices of their loved ones brings a deeper feeling of warmth and encouragement that letters simply can- not. As the deployed return home, the need still exists for communication serv- ices to manage the transition back into civilian life. I personally spoke with a Gold-Star mother of a fallen deployed soldier who told me the last time she heard her son's voice was with a Cell Phones for Soldiers phone card. It is just so very important. You never know what's going to happen and those conversations can mean so much. WW: What do you need from those at the show? RB: Companies and individuals can sup- port our military and veterans through Cell Phones for Soldiers with end of life electronics inventory. As a 501(c)(3) organization, donations are tax deductible. As an R2 certified facility, we can handle the donation of sensitive cor- porate devices. Founded in 2004, we have over 4,000 collection sites across the country. Organizations can join our mission by signing up to collect cell phones on our behalf. ZONUConnect™ Optical Zonu's ZONUConnect is a Universal Base Station-to-DAS Fiber Transport that optimizes the connect- ing fiber count and the total equipment footprint. The Fiber Transport utilizes CWDM or DWDM technology as nec- essary to minimize the fiber count as necessary. The Point-of-Interface is selected for the particular base station configuration and the DAS Interface is selected for the required bands and DAS RF levels needed. Together, the Optical Zonu (Cont'd. from p. 1) system pre-combines the services so as to minimize the total equipment needed. This ensures the minimum rack space and the lowest cost. The universal platform connects to any DAS from your central location, and this greatly simplifies maintenance engineering. The transport uses less fiber than all other approached, including CPRI-to- RRH. And unlike the RRH approach, all your base station equipment stays togeth- er at your property where you have 24/7 access. The MagicMount situated on the top of the BoomBottle means that your mobile device is not only conve- niently close for streaming music via Bluetooth, but also in plain sight in case you get a call or text. It also holds your phone at a convenient angle for video chats or watching videos. The bottom of the new BoomBottle MM speaker is also magnetic, so you can attach it to any metal surface and at virtually any Scosche (Cont'd. from p. 4) angle. And perhaps saving the best for last, the BoomBottle MM comes equipped with its own built-in bottle opener to pop the cap off of your favorite beverage. The BoomBottle MM is set to become your second (next to your mobile phone, of course) favorite gadget when you're hik- ing, hanging out at the beach, by the pool or simply relaxing at home. The BoomBottle MM is available now in black, with multiple colors coming in September 2018. Visit www.scosche.com to purchase yours. Be Business – 5G for Businesses Internet of Things and digital transforma- tion trends define new market realities for businesses while operators are look- ing for growth outside the mobile con- sumer market. This new growth opportu- nity comes with many different facets, from massive scale at one end to critical capabilities at the other end. Operators can address these opportu- nities by clearly identifying use-case cat- egories, and within them, use-case clus- ters with similar go-to-market and deployment challenges. Be First – 5G Innovation Today, innovation is less about brain- storming new opportunities, and more about experimenting and validating assumptions and then learning from the experience before – and faster – than the competition. A central goal for operators is to be first. Be first at connecting with key industry players, in developing use cases Ericsson (Cont'd. from p. 4) and in proving new business models. Be Efficient – 5G Networks We expect mobile data traffic in North America to grow 8X by 2023, to 49GB per smartphone a month. As 5G delivers new spectrum, increased spectral effi- ciency and increased automation levels, networks will transform from internet connectivity pipes to mission-critical infrastructure platforms. Operators can evolve in steps: upgrading the macro radio network with NR; densifying the radio network with 3– 5X as many cells; transforming the 4G EPC to a powerful 5G Core; and distrib- uting cloud capabilities closer to the mobile edge – all with exciting innova- tions for mobile transport, orchestration, automation and monetization.
